Is there any point pushing out few reps with heavy weights?

Is there much point lifting heavy weights while bb bench press only for few reps?

I've seen few guys in my gym benching heavyweights only for a few reps

They're either new to the gym or a power lifter. Low reps is for strength gains more than muscle gains.

But doesn't getting very strong result in bigger muscles? Powerlifters are generally pretty big fellas right?

Re: Is there any point pushing out few reps with heavy weights?

when i wanted to get bigger i always used to have a week every couple of months where i would do low reps and high weights.

it helps you prepare mentally for going up i reckon.

and yes lifting heavy weights will make you bigger

Re: Is there any point pushing out few reps with heavy weights?

I like to throw in a few heavy benches with low reps now and again (with a spotter of course )- it makes a welcome change from the 5 sets of 25 with low weights. A change is as good as a rest.

Or they've been going to the gym for a long time...

Low reps and high reps both have a place in any routine.

i like to add a low rep high weight set every now and again - if not just to see how much my strength has improved.

No training is pointless, different methods suit different people also not everyone's goals are the same.

Re: Is there any point pushing out few reps with heavy weights?

I mix and match so may do 160-180 x 10 reps....then may only get 4 reps out on 200......because I'm burnt out from previous sets....nowt wrong whatsoever with it.

They have thier place in most routines but you will most likely up the risk of injury and for this reason I don't bother with it.

ghostdog will become famous soon enough
Re: Is there any point pushing out few reps with heavy weights?

occasionaly me and my mate will do a high weight / low rep set to get strength gains enough to get a few more out on our 'building' reps eg. if we're only getting 5-6 and we want 6-8.
right or wrong, it does the trick.
