Newbie confused about supplements - help...

Hi All, first post.

I am looking to lose weight and build some muscle but not sure which supplements (whey/creatine) to use or when.

I am 40 weighing 178lbs and could do with losing around a stone in bf. Ideally I would like to add the same back in muscle. I jog on a treadmill for 1 hour 2-3 times a week so I’m reasonably fit. I use weight machines a couple of times a week and feel I’m ready to kick on and have a good go.

I plan to train 3 times a week and consume 6 meals a day. Could someone advise me which type of supplement/s I should use, how much and when to use it. Also is it OK to use whey and creatine together?, seen conflicting advice. Could someone also advise a good manufacturer of supplements that don’t break the bank? Maximuscle seem to provide all that’s needed but costs a fortune!

I need to take my food with me to work so a meal replacement bar is best mid morning and afternoon. Anyone any bar suggestions or recipes?

Regarding powders, once mixed into a shake how long before using them? I could do with taking one prepared with me to work as an alternative to the bars!

If I use creatine, what’s best to mix it with?

Sorry for all the waffling but if I’m going to have a good go I want to make sure my body is best prepared in terms of nutrition.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers - tomlini

Dont use MAximuscle, there crap.

Firstly I would state that you cant really lose BF and add muscle at the same time. What I would suggest is doing one first.

For example : Design a diet and a trainign program that will help you lose BF and get your BF% down to your desired figure. Once you have done this then you can adjust your diet and your training for a lean bulk diet so you basically stay at your desired BF% and gain muscle.

To be honest mate your ****ing in the wind buying spplements at this stage. Its like sticking a spoiler on a rover metro, yes it will helps its downforce but whats the point when the rest of the car is far from an F1 car let alone anything that would require additional downforce.

Now Im not saying you are the metro but your current routine and diet is. Get the foundations in place, good routine, well structured balanced diet and get enough rest. THEN start tweaking things with the help of supplements. They are 5% of the equasion so why worry about 5% of your goal when you havent started on the other 95%

Re: Newbie confused about supplements - help...

Thanks for the prompt responses all.

Looks like I should be losing the weight before gaining. Problem is I've been doing that for twelve months. Started at 14st 4lbs, now at a plateau at 12st 10lbs. Aged 40 and running that much I've injured my feet. Don't have a bad diet but am changing from 3 to 6 meals.

Problem I have is hunger cravings. Though I'm disciplined I struggle to keep portion sizes down even though eating well (turkey, chicken etc)
This has lead me to protein powders etc. I suspect if I increase protein it should stabilise my blood sugars and prevent hunger pangs?

Taken everybodies advice onboard regarding supplements too early but I think there is mileage in the protein to stop hunger. If so, can anyone advise a better product than promax at a better price (that tastes good)

Was wondering about a fat burner like xenadrine EFX but not sure? Wondered if the increase in metabolism may end my plateau!

Any help appreciated.

Cheers - tomlini

Re: Newbie confused about supplements - help...

if hunger is a problem adding liquid meals ( protein shakes ) isnt really going to help. You need more fiberous foods. Post up your current diet and we may be able to help you further. Supplements are going to do anything if your diet isnt correct.

Re: Newbie confused about supplements - help...

Here's my diet. Not the same every day but near enough. Tend to have a blow out day most weeks also.

Breakfast:
2 slices wholegrain toast or
4 egg omellet or
3 weetabix and half skimmed, half semi skimmed milk

Lunch:
Wholemeal pitta with 1 boiled egg and slice of ham

Dinner:
Turkey burgers made from 200g turkey steak and minced, cooked on a lean green grilling machine without oil. Served on 2 wholemeal pittas with smudge of salsa and low cal mayo.

Snacks:
2 bananas and 2 apples

Alchohol:
2 bottles white wine weekly

No cakes, crisps or bread (bread seems to bloat me!)

Any help appreciated.

cheers

Well I think you can improve that diet massively and Im not suprised you are hungry through the day. I highly reccomend getting your head buried in the diet forums. Adding supplements to a diet like that would be a total watse of time and money in my opinion and im guessing in everyone elses i here.
