Swimming?

Hi,

Is swimming a good form of cardio and is it also good for muscle development. I really like swimming but am unsure of how it can fit in to my training. Also, what is the intensity of swimming, i.e. does it burn a lot of calories?

If so what strokes are best, I personally enjoy swimming lengths breast stroke as it is relaxing, but is it best to do front crawl or butterfly.

Thanks.

Re: Swimming?

swimming is an excellent all over cardio exercise and should not take the same toll on you as running for example, but that depends on how good a swimmer you are. Also, you find it difficult if sore from weight training. re which stroke I would suggest mixing it up but mostly front crawl.
for me the biggest issue with it is the mental side - I just find it very boring as no music but if I could overcome this I would do far more swimming.

Good for muscular endurance, but you won't put on any real bulk from it.

I enjoy a 20-30 min swim after my Sat/Sun gym session.

To overcome boredom I mix up the strokes a little, eg 10 lengths front crawl, followed by 10 back stroke, maybe a few as fast as possible, or do intervals - one fast & one slow.

I don't do breast stroke as the twisting motion is not good for my dodgy knee.

Re: Swimming?

well if you dont weight train it can help build modest muscle especially if you swim with paddles to add to the resistance but if you are training in the gym it wont enhance your development, despite giving a pump. I know plenty of swimmers who put in big mileage(20k+) per week and have little muscle to show for it.
Personally I run so as to leave my upper body rest as much as possible but swimming is healthy and low impact and if you liek it you should do it.

Re: Swimming?

I use to swim for several years at quite a good standard. Excellent for cardio and uses so many muscles at once. Personally I would swim using front crawl. It will also get your breathing patterns working and is a lot more strenuous then breast stroke. I use to do butterfly but how anyone can do that as a casual swim i do not know. It really is a killer.

I got very broad shoulders from swimming which now shows as my shoulders are dominate
