Elbow problem affecting bench press

Hi there

I have a general problem with the use of my elbow when doing certain exercises. The bench press being the main one.

It's hard to explain this, so I'll do the best I can!

Basically, I cannot do the complete full range of motion I would like when doing the bench press. I can't bend my elbow all the way in a smooth action when arms are tensed because I have a bit of the joint that clicks in the middle in my right arm. It's basically the joint that rolls over bone sticking out (not the main pointy bit, the one behind it if you know what I mean). Basically this joint cannot roll over the bone when I tense my biceps, say, if I want to flex my biceps.

I don't know if that makes sense or not. When a saw a doctor some time ago, he mentioned that pointy bone causing could be smoothed down, allowing the full range of motion.

What this means is that realistically I can do a bench press and get my upper arms parallel to the floor, but any further and i'll get the click, but then I can continue on further, but it normally hurts slightly so I couldn't do that too many times. So I just generally stick to about 3/4 of the normal range.

If you've managed to digest all that (!) then I was wondering what your thoughts are? I could go to the doctor and I think I might be able to sort this, but means I can't train probably for a while, but might be worth it I suppose in the long run. I'm also curious if it is really necessary to go all the way down to arms bent when doing the bench press or can I get by with arms parellel to the floor?

Hope that makes sense, and thanks for any input.

Cheers

You can use "partial reps", but you'll not hit your pecs as fully as someone with a greater range of motion.

Re: Elbow problem affecting bench press

Hi mate.
I would pay £200 and get an mri scan done in london. This will give you a much better idea of the problem. If possible try and avoid surgery on a joint, I had one op on my elbow to remove a bone spure and it took a good year to fully rehab and recover, that said my elbow is still not perfect. Good luck

Hello thanks for the replies. I think I may see the doctor and get him to refer me to a specialist and see what they say.

Re: Elbow problem affecting bench press

Hi

I used to have the exact same thing in my left arm or very very similar. What was happening is my ulnar nerve had come out of the natural trench it sat in in the surrounding muscle etc. in the elbow. This meant it slipped around the inside when I bent my arm passed 90 degrees, and clicked rather uncomfortably. The way it was solved was to have surgery, unfortunately, which meant being in a cast for 2-3 weeks and no where near any stressful activity for 6 weeks after; a new trench is made in the bicep and the nerve needs to become embedded. I think the operation was called an ulnar nerve transposition.
Ended up with an awesome scar though and problem was gone totally until I ruined it again playing sport.
btw I'm just regurgitating what i was told at the time.
Hope I've given you an idea of what to expect and not worried you.
