Size of olympic discs

HI,
I am new to training and have a 1" set of discs. When I look at training vids the olympic plates look to have a larger diameter than my plates, which means that I deadlift and clean from too low down. Can anyone tell me the diameter of a std olympic 45lb plate.

Cheers
Rich

Re: Size of olympic discs

They vary a little bit, according to brand. At our gym we have a bit of a mix with York ones and Weider ones etc and I think they vary by about half an inch to an inch. It doesn't really matter so long as you choose equally-sized ones.

So far as I'm aware, you CAN'T deadlift from loo low. If you're doing stiff-legged, you'll only be able to go as far as you can bend, and if you're doing bent-legged you should be starting with your legs in squat position anyway, so the difference should be negligible.

Good on you, man. Not many new starters do deadlifting. You'll reap the rewards soon enough!

Re: Size of olympic discs

I am reading lots of stuff, currently doing power clean, military press, front squat as a basic starter routine and following some crossfit exercises - deadlifts, thrusters etc... to get an all round fitness. I am starting from being very overweight, so basic full body exercises are good...
