| It's what you do on the outside that makes you | Re: WHO THINKS 10 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER FOR REPS? i use 10 as a foundation to heavier weights, if i can lift 10 on something i up the weight for the next set and lower the reps to 8 and then 6, increasing weight as i go with comfortable jumps, so far so good, the following week i can lift 10 of the 8 rep set if thats makes sense, muscles seem to be triggered well by jumping the weights, |

But its a different method of programming. Like I said its just a different method that you can incorporate into your training. Most days I will set a target of around 20 reps for most exercises but if I specifically want to focus on a bodypart I will use the techniques I've highlighted earlier to get more out of the workout. What Im trying to highlight is that if you are going for a heavier than normal lift there are ways to remove the mental barriers so that you can get that lift more easily. This can be applied to everyone beginner or advanced, mental focus should be instilled from the outset IMO.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: WHO THINKS 10 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER FOR REPS? Tom I agree RE mind over matter for want of a less cliche term. I find the rigidt of the specific range allows for noted overload and clear boundaries. Now if i were to go for the theory you have presented I would have to have a measure, for example a scale 1-10 or just how hard I felt the set was as if i put down the number one week and it was less than the week before, then that would be negative progression ON PAPER. I think it would be hard to employ the laissez faire approach when doing something like the wavy method of overload but again, end result is the end result Would you say the psychological profiling of people will determine whether this method is good or not for them? So would an analyticacal type of person still be able to get on with this? |

LS analyticals are fine to use this because a partner can tell them after how many reps they did. Im not saying remove rep counts altogether, just remove them from the set so that your focus is on the lift and not the number. I would focus not on that the workout was worse than the week before but WHY it felt worse. Were you ill? Did you eat enough food that week? Was there any change in your patterns? This will give you a recipe for success. I use this in my coaching so that people can identify how they perform best. This can then be used in a hypnosis session to program the perfect workout schedule. Very good for people who like routine as all the factors come into play in terms of the 'recipe' so if all that falls into place they KNOW they are having a good workout today which is half the mental focus battle won.
