What gloves for deadlifts?

Hello all,
Took the advice of the experienced guys a few weeks ago on this forum and started doing deadlifts, chins, and dips, as well as bent over rows.
I am quite amazed at how much stronger and bigger I have got, unfortunately the Cyclone stuff has added quite a bit of fat to my belly, will look into reducing the carbs a bit and doing some cardio in the mornings to see if that makes a difference over the nect few months.

I am finding that my grip starts going on my "Pull" days.
I start with deadlifts and chins, then curls and bent over rows. (In that order).
My forearms are bigger than ever before but my grip starts giving out on the deadlift, which scares me!
Do you guys advocate the uses of gloves with straps, or the ones with a hook? Or not?
I feel I can lift more on the deadlift, but the grip is letting me down.
Any advice much appreciated. The wealth of knowledge on this site still astounds me.

Re: What gloves for deadlifts?

Are you sure your just not going to heavy to what you can handle ?

I have a similar problem, but my problem has only arrisen from progressive overload.

I have done this.

80kg 4 x 6, 82.5kg 4 x 6 etc etc all the way up to working up to 97.5kg 4 x 6. My grip has been fine each week and hasnt given way.

But when i tryed 100kg, my grip was really going.

Have you progressed in the deadlift or just jumped onto a weight which could possibly be too heavy ?

Re: What gloves for deadlifts?

How do you hold the bar when deadlifting? I had problems with my grip and I changed the way I hold the bar to "under/over" and I can lift more with no grip loss now.
I've heard others say you really don't want to be using the gloves with the hooks though......

Hope this helps.

Yer, a mixed grip could also benefit you.

Re: What gloves for deadlifts?

Thanks guys,
I have only started this about 2 months ago after advice from guys on the forum. I gradually built up from 55 to 80kg in this time. i know this sounds quick but that was also because I started doing the deadlifts after the chins, now I do it first when I am fresh and strongest at the start of the session. Also I was easily doing the lower weight in the beginning so I feel I spent too long litfing less than I could, so was keen to increase the weight.
Maybe I need to reduce the weight?
Why are the gloves a bad idea? Too much strain on the wrists? Could cause injury?

Re: What gloves for deadlifts?

Sorry forgot to say, I use an over grip with both hands. I have seen people using one over and one under, never tried it as it looked odd and I was not too sure if this was good technique or bad.
Do you then alternate which hand is over and which is under, to even things out?

Re: What gloves for deadlifts?

Forearm flexors give out on the 3rd set of 8 reps. Manage 3 of the 8 then have to stop.

Re: What gloves for deadlifts?

mixed grip (over/under) will allow you to lift more, however i find it awkward and unnatural, id stick to normal overhand grip with weight you can handle and add some forearm/grip work in other part of the week, in time your forearms will catch up

Re: What gloves for deadlifts?

Dont ware gloves they will do nothing but hinder your grip strength. let the skin toughen up on your hands

Absolutely use a mixed grip one over one under, it will become second nature after a while.

Use chalk or you could try this stuff http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-surgrip-an...d=p3286.c0.m14

its absolutely awesome but hard to get these days so you may have to pay about a tenner for it on ebay, but a bottle lasts for about a year

Re: What gloves for deadlifts?

I am having a similar issue. I have "given up" using straps (penny in the swear box). I am trying Farmer's Walks to build grip strength.
Any other suggestions would be welcome as I have noticed quite a few people in journals etc saying that grip is letting them down on deadlifts.
itraininthedark told me that hanging from the chinning bar is good.

Re: What gloves for deadlifts?

To build up grip strength for deads the best thing you can do IMO is to do static holds in the power-rack.

Load the bar up with about 30k more that you can deadlift and position the pins so you only have to move the bar 2-3 inches to the top position.

Lift and hold

The lift will be p!ss easy as the range of motion is so short. The best thing to improve grip is gripping.

Do the obvious things such as using chalk to make sure there is no moisture on the hands obviosuly.
