Bench Press

Been on here awhile just reading and gettin some nice info so keep it up lads ,just had a question about my bench press routine,i do 3 sets of 6 reps ,my first set at 90kg then second at 85 and third at 80, is this ok decreasing weight , i wouldnt be able to do 3 sets at 90kg and when i start out at 80kg and work my way up usually really struggle to get 6 reps in at 90kg

Re: Bench Press

Why dont you go up the way dude?? 80, 85, 90?? tonight i did, 40's, 42's, 50's dumbells of course. I feel when i start nice and light it warms the muscle up for heavier lifting. Although i do 2 x 20reps using 15's as a warm up.

Do fewer sets then. And/or do fewer reps on the way up to your heavier weight. And/or longer rest periods between sets. It's so easy to burn out early in a workout.

Re: Bench Press

do week about dude, try all sorts of different combinations, remember its about stressing the muscle and doing perfect form on each rep. Sometime you need to change the weight to get this feeling.

Re: Bench Press

go up in smaller moves

2.5kg or 1.25kg

no shame in stepping back from 90kg

ive had to 'reset' my bench a few times to get a better set

Re: Bench Press

I wish our gym had smaller weights to go up by....

Dumbell bench pressing this is what we have to do:

3 sets (6reps per set)

1st set - 36kg
2nd set - 40kg
3rd set - 46kg

I aint strong enough yet to do the 46kg without a spotter and with good technique.... But we dont have anything between 40-46....

So its onto barbell bench to do that... Then its progressively larger weights....

BUT like said above, i try to make sure that every time its slow, controlled and really good technique so the next day i feel incredible burns from the workout.

You see people swinging them about, and going way to fast like they trying to see a blur. Not worth it.

Love working chest.. did that this evening

Re: Bench Press

I used to go warm up set, low weight, say 80kg, 100k then 90k, I burn out pretty easy when doing big compound moves and found this a good way of consistently lifting more every week. But its probably splitting hairs but I found warm up ( half your biggest weight, really slow ), then your first real set you are still warming up, After this lift your heaviest as you have highest ammount of energy vs fully warmed up muscle group, then after ive killed myself on the heaviest, knock it down slightly to make sure I get a decent ammount of reps in for the last set.
