![]() ![]() | Re: weight belts do you use if one ? I fractured my back from a fall about 20years ago and when i got into weights i would religiously use one. Problem was whenever i didnt have one on my back felt weak in or out of the gym. As a result i would routinely have back problems. However as time went on and i became more knowledgable and developed i began to realise that by wearing a belt as much as i did actually made it weaker. I then gradually decreased the amount i would wear one and built up my core muscles more to support my lumbar region themselves. As a result i now have a reasonably strong back and only wear a belt for heavy dead lifts, ( NOT SLDL though ), and Squats, ie usually my last set or two at most as a precaution. I feel whilst they are a tool to be used they can be over used and counter productive. I even see people wear a belt doing abs or seated calves for some reason. |

I couldnt even do a lying leg curl without a belt once mate and now i max out the machine without one. Just make it a gradual process Last edited by BRABUS; 09-06-2008 at 04:09 PM. |

Good advice there Brabus I do a lot of core exercises and stretches anyway to strengthen and relax my core ( I am considering starting pilates or yoga to aid in my flexiability that could be the start of another topic ....How many BB`ers who compete do yoga or pilates and would it help in the stage routine as in poses ? I think it would ) Glad your back is sorted I bet you was cautious on your first set of squats and Deads .

I had realy just started to get into the weights thing and it kind of supported the fitness stuff i was doing. But yeh when i did lift i was ultra cautious anjd that belt was like a corset from Dolly Parton! It strenghened fairly quick but would give me grief if done any bending that was repetitive or if i bent to pick up something and i didnt think about it. It would have me in a shape of an 'S'. I never let it hamper me though and ended up in the Navy tug of war champions and then went on to beat the inter forces team ( Army's ) that had not been beaten in 9 years and should of done Earls Court that year, but can you beleive it they were so confident in winning again they had already made provisions to go. So out of courtesy ( my ass ) it was decided they should still go. Anyway back on topic, yeh for me the belt should be binned and only used for that heaviest of sets for safety in Squats, Deads and Bent over rows for eg. | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: weight belts do you use if one ? I use it as little as possible. I use it on heavy deads and sometimes squats but will always do a few lighter sets with no belt to keep everything strong and stable. They can squash organs, they up your short term blood pressure lots and if overused can be more detremental than good. I am relatevely new to using the belt so this could be wrong! |

I've not got a belt and in any event I doubt there's enough velcro and leather in England to make one that fits. As an aside, I do see people in the gym wearing them when benching. Why? Your back's not in play. Can someone enlighten me?
