![]() | Squats - Hurting my neck... When I do Squats, the back of my neck hurts and is sore to touch. I have the bar on my back like everyone else does, so can't understand what's going on. If you can imagine a line that intersects the spine from the top of the shoulders, that's where it hurts. There's a lump abover the vertabrae, not quite sure what's going on. Any idea? |

![]() | Re: Squats - Hurting my neck... I just used the bar when I started training last July, it was really sore then. When I run with a rucksack over my right shoulder (when going to catch a train for example) it sometimes hurts. At the start of August my relationship ended and I stopped training. I have been training again just over a month, and only started doing Squats again on Friday. The gym I use now has padding for the bar. I wondered whether doing front squats might be the answer? Is this a common 'injury' to develop? |

| f*ck a duck | Re: Squats - Hurting my neck... you'll probably get little red things on your traps and shoulders mate i bought a cuhion that goes round the bar, although i have heard a towel does the job just as well ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Squats - Hurting my neck... To be honest mate, i would steer clear of a pad or towel wrapped around the bar. The very fact that you say squats are hurting your neck strongly suggests you have the bar placed too high (ie on or very close to the vertebrae in the neck). The bar should be under that lump you mention, resting along the traps. It might seem easier to put the bar against your neck, but sooner or later - as you have discovered - you will run into problems. If i remember correctly, this issue is covered in 'the insider's handbook on weight training technique' by Stuart McRobert. This is an excellent book and will help you out i'm sure. Keep with the squatting tho bro. Good luck! |
