How soon to compete?

I was just wondering when do you know you are ready to compete. I see alot of guys at the gym who say they are body builders etc but they have never competed. As I am female, how would I know when I ready to compete? I know it takes a long time to get in the right shape, but when do you know when you are ready? I am def going to compete one day, whether next year / year after, depends on progress but am very curious as to how you know you are ready.
Do most of you just train? Or do you compete?

Re: How soon to compete?

Impartial, honest critique of your physique by someone who knows the criteria or can see potential to meet that criteria

Not a current training partner, mate or family member

If you feel comfortable posting pics there are plenty of people who could say

1 - yes compete now
2 - diet for X amount of weeks and look for a show
3 - good base but give it X amount of time
4 - perhaps you could develop X, Y or Z

Re: How soon to compete?

Do women generally compete in figure and fitness before BB? I prefer the BB but was wondering whether fitness would be best as a stepping stone? or basically to even set more realistic goals?

Re: How soon to compete?

depends where you are
Some dont have the desire or ability to choreograph routines and perfrom them whilst others may not have the frame to do. Conversely its a stepping stone for many who are currently not heavily muscled, whilst others prefer to stay in the fitness bracket

Your shout really, have someone look at your physique and the way you move for some impartial advice

Re: How soon to compete?

OK thanks for that, I'l keep up with my training for now and post some progress shots on my training log page in about 3 weeks time just to see. Its difficult for me because friends and family say I am filling out a bit with muscle and tell me I need to slow down, but then I look at some of the competitors and I look absolutely tiny!!! I will have to rely on you guys to be straight with me when I post some shots up in a few weeks. Cheers

Re: How soon to compete?

If anythings going to frustrate you its going to be competeing in figure/fitness comps. The critera for judgeing is laughable.

I would if I were you, focus on your training for a few years then do a contest. Ofcourse some make great progress but its rare without somthing else in the mix (that said im convinced that the water in wales is tainted with tren lol).

Dont listen to your friends and family about putting on to much size, even more so than male bodybuilding people in general wont understand your motivation and will be critical because your chalangeing a gender steriotype. Its highly unlikely that your pileing on the mass unless your genetics are unbelivably good. Just keep working hard your do fine.

The first 6 months-1 year are great fun, your make progress most sessions.

That time will pass quickly, your soon wonder where the months went.

Competeing is a great medium/long term goal, its important to keep that in mind but also have some short term targets (amount lifted per session on a particular exersise, time between sets, looking better in the mirror.) there all good things and if you have a series of incremental short term targets that build apon one another then soon enough time has pass and your a long way down the road. For example.

Your overhead press might be 20kg at the start, but your short term target is to get to 21kg the next time. you get it, so the next one is 22kg ect...
12 weeks on your lifting 32kg, thats over 50% increase since you started.

Re: How soon to compete?

Yup!

concur with what has been said..have someone who competes and coaches have a look over ya. If comfortable posting pics here there are a good few here ( ninepack, pscarb, TinyTom, Rippedglutes...and many others) who are competing at a high level and will give you "no BS" advice and appraisal.

As for how long it takes to compete....thats up to you. I would suggest that you compete when you feel you have a physique you want to show to the world! When you are confidant and comfortable with your level of development, go for it.

cheers,

G
