Gym flooring

Hey guys,

I'm upgrading my home gym, which is in my garage, with a new power rack.

I wondered if it would be a good idea to use rubber/foam interlocking matts on the floor?

I've already got some knocking around, I didn't know if this would make the power cage unstable or the bench unstable when lifting? The matts are about 10mm thick.

Any thoughts on this?

Re: Gym flooring

Can you just place them around 3 of the outside corners...I think you'de be fine if you place them on the mat...Just do it and if it's not steady, change it.

Re: Gym flooring

Wouldn't use foam since i would've thought it too soft.I actually use old quarry conveyor belt rubber which i seem to be able to get hold of quite easily.

Just put the whole cage on 3/4'' ply(8x4 sheet) and put some rubber matting where the barbell weights will hit the floor on either side of the cage.

Re: Gym flooring

My home gym is covered in rubber matting.

Dont buy the stuff call gym mats though as they are very very expensive. try and find a local rubber factory as you will find they probably do animal mats i think mine was called and are used in horses stables.

They were the same size and the proper gym mats and 1/2" thicker for a quater of the price.

Re: Gym flooring

Cheers for the info.

I do have some 10mm hard rubber, proabably enough to put in the main work area, but didn't know if that would be too hard to absorb impact, ie.e. to take some of the impact away from the joints?

I thought the softer foam/rubber might give a bit of extra protection.
