Can muscle turn to fat?

Hey all

I've just started working out at the gym and I want to get as big as possible for my build im 21 years old and worried that my muscle may turn into fat when I get into my 50s or 60s.

Re: Can muscle turn to fat?

The only real risk is that you stop training and still continue to eat the same amount of food. Then, you get fat.

Re: Can muscle turn to fat?

just realise that when ur body is used to working hard and suddenly u stop, u will put fat on. This is becuase the body is used to burning off more energy. When this doesnt happen the foos u eat is more likley to be stored as fat. If u stop training, ull have to reduce what u used to eat significantly!

Re: Can muscle turn to fat?

Think along the lines that muscle and fat are two distinct types of structure in the body. They are not interchangeable physiologically.
I think you have the theory already about the calorie intake and how that could have an affect on your body composition.

The answer is don't stop training when you get into your 50s and 60s.

Re: Can muscle turn to fat?

The amount of people who believe they can get fat and turn it in to muscle is untrue!! When you stop training and your muscles shrink, would you not have excess skin?? Like when extremely fat people lose a shed load of weight??

Thanks for making me smile after a hard day Jonny! Looks like you have had that popular misconception cleared up now. It's about as true as when your mum tells you that if the wind changes direction while you are pulling your face, it'll stay like that!

It's true that muscle & fat cannot 'morph' from one form into the other, but you can utilise stored bodyfat to help fuel workouts (with the correct diet) which will in turn yield muscle gains.

Fat boy here - slowly losing weight (1-2 lbs a week -- 1st 9lb since New Year, 1st 10lbs to go to target.). Tell me more please. Or even just a website to start me off - I have no probs doing my own research.
