Age concern

Age is relative. I will hit the big four oh this year and have only just got into weight training. In the past (20 years ago) I enjoyed entering full contact kickboxing tournaments so hard work and pain don't put me off.

So to my question.

With lots of hard work will it be possible for me to develop the sort of extreme strength needed to enter powerlifting competitions or strongman competitions? I don't care how much hard work I need to put in, I am just interested in finding out if a 39 year old can train to be a powerlifter or strongman and compete. I know I won't be a world champ but would like to compete at some level in the future.
