If you can't squat, what's best to build legs?

Compound only. What's the best alternative to squatting?

Lunge
Split Squat (what I'm doing now)
Leg Press
hack sqaut machine (haven't tried these but they are apparently easier on the knees and back)

I'm 6'2 with hyper-mobility in the joints. A recent knee injury meant I stopped doing front squats. The physio said my knee cap was sort of all over the place, same as my wrists. Anyway I gave it a break and recently tried again, front squat, back and even with box. After a few reps, I feel severe pain again. Physio said to limit depth and keep feet hip-width apart. Hip width apart just don't work for my structure.. forces me to lean forward and all it does is give me a lower back workout.

I've been doing the barbell split squats and my legs and **** def feel sore but I dunno if the leg press or something else would be better for mass?

Re: If you can't squat, what's best to build legs?

Yeah trap bar would be great, if my gym had one, arrgh!

Maybe I'll give the hack squat a go, if it hurts I'll go with the leg press

So either of them combined with the split squats should be good

Not many people seem to do the split squats though.... ?

Re: If you can't squat, what's best to build legs?

is there any particular reason you dont squat pscarb or is it just personal preference to use a leg press?
