![]() | A Thread for diabetic bodybuilders Hi guys, I'm new to this forum. I've had insulin dependent diabetes (T1D) for about 16 years and just recently started on an insulin pump w/CGM this past December - and absolutely love it. I've been bodybuilding on and off (mainly off recently...) for the last 10 years. There are often problems and adjustments that we need to make in bodybuilding in order to take our diabetes into account-in terms of blood sugars, insulins, etc... I'm currently trying to get back into bodybuilding. I've always found that there is very little information out there about diabetes and bodybuilding. So, I was thinking that we should start a forum on "All about diabetes and bodybuilding" to discuss the issues specific to diabetes and bodybuilding - things like its impact on insulin use (ie lowered, higher, basal rate changes), types of bodybuilding diets and the impact on blood sugars, supplements, ability to loose weight and get cut, ability to put on muscle mass, etc... In addition, this could be a great forum for mutual support. Any comments, help, discussion from anyone would be great. I'd like other bodybuilders with Type I diabetes to post questions and answers and opinions on this tread. So, maybe, here, diabetic bodybuilders can talk about their insulins, bulking, using supplements, their workouts, even steroid use, cardio, diets, contest preps, all in a diabetes context. So, considering that there are already a number of diabetic bodybuilders on this forum, why not pool the incrediable amout of experience, knowledge and wisdom about bodybuilding and diabetes. So, anyone (with Diabetes), please post a question/suggestion for all to read and learn from. Anyone willing to join in? |

![]() | Re: A Thread for diabetic bodybuilders hi, ive been a guest for a while and now a member for a month or so and this site has helped me loads, ive not posted much because there is so much reading to be done on this site to help get you started. in january this year i weighed 21st 10lbs and my type2 diabetes was all over the place. since joining this site and getting a multi gym and some free weights and through alot of reading on here about trainning and diet i have got my weight down to 18st 13lbs since january and my diabetes in under control (never above 6.5) my diet has mainly been low carb (less than 100g a day) lowish fat (less than 70g a day)and high protein (300g a day) also jogging and sit ups everyday and weights in between. i still have to take my normal amount of diabetes tablets everyday for now but its being monitored and may be reduced soon because im finding that most days i am having to eat a biscuit or something becuse my blood sugar levels are going a bit too low on my normal medication with the new diet. in short this site and my determination has helped my diabetes improve from a dangerous level and now i have to continue to learn more about food and diet to continue losing weight and getting healthier. |

![]() | Infusion sites and shaving... Infusion sites and shaving... I have a bit of a strange question for all you diabetic bodybuilders out there, but since many bodybuilders shave their body hair, maybe it won't be such a strange question after all... So, I've been on the insulin pump since December and I really like it. But, since going on the pump, I've also lost weight-specifically belly fat. So, when I put in a new infusion set, I often hit a small vein or the muscle bed and then get bad insulin absorption. I still have a small bit of belly fat around my belly button, so, I've been putting the infusion set there (about an inch around the belly button) and will be switching to the shorter infusion sets (6 mm instead of 9 mm). The problem is that I have a bit of hair on my abs so taking the old infusion set out can be really painful with the adhesive pulling on the hair. So, I've been thinking of shaving my stomach to make it easier. My wife agrees that getting rid of that belly hair would make things easier - but she feels that waxing it off would be better (and easier in the long term) than shaving it. A lot of you guys here are serious bodybuilders. Some of you must be shaving - what do you recommend? Shaving my abs every few days or waxing? And if waxing, which kit? Have any of you guys run into this problem with sticky infusion sets and body hair? This is all kind of ironic since I'm one of the least hairy guys out there... |
