With beginners it's always best to focus on pound progression, that's what complete new guys to the gym should do - IMO. But then when is it you decide to progress them? 6weeks, 2months, 6months, a year? It's awkward over computer as you can't see exact progress, that's where working in a gym with clients is handy, I see all types of routines and can watch them progress work-out by work-out or in some cases they may plateu so I can either cut work down or add in things...what we have to remember is one-size doesn't fit all. As I mentioned in my thread, I jumped straight onto a 4 day split routine I found in flex after about 3months - and where most would say I would of been hugely over-trained, surprisingly enough I actually did really well and put just under a stone on in bodyweight. At the moment it really seems like 99% of people on message boards are always going on about over-training. Yes, it's an issue but I honestly don't think it's a big a problem as people make-out (providing diet is 100%)....I think more people under-train than over-train when they get advice off these boards as they sh1t themselves thinking they're going to over-train if they do that little extra. Aslong as diet is good, rest is good then muscle is hard to over-train - its the CNS and PNS that get over-trained, which is why we use de-loading periods and well though-out routines. Just to point out, as you probably know bully, this is absolutely nothing personal, I usually agree with pretty much all you say and get on well with you - just giving food for thought ![]() |

I totally agree that everybody is different and there are many roads to rome. I still maintain that lots of people overtrain tho lol. Besides i would rather undertrain than overtrain. Overtrain = no progress and perhaps go backwards undertrain= small amount of progress. But its still progress ;) My workouts would probably shock you mate, you would think "is that it" probably lol. But its working still ;)

I believe when new to the gym the body will respond positivley to any stimulus regardless of volume,as long as adequate nutrition is present. Both ah24 and Bully make valid points, and i agree with ah24,far too many overtraining theories about, however saying that,i tend to lean towards the compound/less is more argument for newbies so as to get the basics right and perfect form.

For the newbie pretty much anything works, but somethings work better than others. Think Mark Rippetoe said that IIRC ![]()
