Re: What speed setting should the treadmill be, if i want to burn fat?

Where's AH24 when you need him... It's all to do with VO2 rates or something.

Basically you will always burn 'carbs' but there is an optimum level in which less muscle mass is wasted in order to get the fat burned.

Then again I'm still doing tabatas for my cardio - and not doing it that often either - which is keeping me 'lean enough'. Running I find insanely boring.

If it helps at all my 'exercise regime' is gym thrice weekly, 2x 1hr walks, tabatas 1x-2x per week, and possibly starting 5-a-side again if my knees can handle it.

Oh and the 2x 1h walks are purely functional - I pop into town to 'handle my business' twice per week.

Normally one of the following, arranged by modal occurance:

# The bank run (aka "popping out for a quick barclays"...)
# Going to the dry cleaners (the above can result in pant soilage...)
# Getting some BB'ing friendly lunch (some days my 'lunchbox' is large and overflowing, otherdays its empty and void...)
# Getting something Wii related (I wonder when they will release Wii Watersports... That would be mildly humerous after an ale or two)

etc etc etc

Re: What speed setting should the treadmill be, if i want to burn fat?

The main factor is heart rate and duration.

You need to get your heart rate upto 65% (as you correctly stated), and keep that heart rate up for over 20 mins. This is where a heart rate monitor watch with a "zone" beeper helps alot.

The work you are doing under 20 mins is not burning much fat - The body is using the glycogen as energy. At around the over 20 mins mark the body starts using fat as energy.
