January...

Well it's almost time for half the country to join a gym for 4 weeks... and for me to get back there after a couple of weeks off over Christmas. But I really need to get my ärse into shape and train right. I have been working out for about 5 years or so but to look at me, well, I'm still a fat bloke. Stats:

Chest 48
Arms 17.5
Thigh 27
Waist 41

Weight - well, the last time I dared step on a scale I was about 118kg/260lb.

Having been appropriately shouted at here on another thread about my crap routine, that is being sorted out and diet should be easy enough to crack.

Any tips or motivation?

Re: January...

opposite for me.. the mirror is evil. i look at it and get down about my size - you have one of 2 motivations.. pleasure & pain.. the pain with how you look today or the pleasure of how you want to look in 6 months.

my motivation is the pleasure.

Re: January...

LOL good hints one and all.

TBH I used to hate looking at myself in the mirror and now it is my friend. I don't weigh myself so that weight up there is a bit of a guess - I go by how my clothes fit. But in the last 2 years I've gone up a size (is this coincidental with my starting deadlifts?) and I need to reduce this belly.

Perhaps I should forego the iron for a month and just do loads of cardio... or would that be training suicide?

Re: January...

Training, Diet, and Cardio mate... Stick to using all 3 as part of your 'plan of action'

I'm assuming your diet is clean and your training is good yes?

Re: January...

Ahem... yes? :rolleye11

Well the training is OK, basic exercises with heavy but manageable weight, and I've taken advice from elsewhere on this board and cut back on the number of sets. Diet could be improved but it's not a complete disaster. Nothing isn't fixable... I just need slapped about a bit, I reckon.

What are you doing currently for cardio? How many kcals per day are you eating? Whats your PCF breakdown?

Re: January...

Cardio is 20-30 mins on the crosstrainer after my weights workout. Can't answer the other two questions I'm afraid other than I do try to watch my fat intake.

*slap* must do better!

I would comitt to a powerlifting contest in March/April - and do it NO MATTER WHAT. You will have 3 months of your best training in the gym -guarenteed.

Forget cardio , just watch your empty cals, the weight comes off on its own.

Re: January...

Powerlifting??? Interesting thought, though I'd be laughed out of the room. I've not done free bench press or squats for years and owing to a weak lower back my (smith) squat is barely over the 100 mark.

But I get your drift though. Hit the basic moves hard(er) and see what happens.

You wouldn't be laughed out of anywhere at a powerlifting meet. Everyone who competes gets lots of support and encouragement. Consider bench only if you have a disk issue with your back.

Th main point about committing to any competition, powerlifting, bodybuilding or whatever is that is provides a huge motivation for training in the build up.

If you are training on a Smith machine with 100kgs, you need to revise your training environment perhaps - at least I know I would have to.

Good luck.
