Squat depth

How low do you think the ultimate squat depth is for knee care.

i.e ..... it being most knee friendly.

Im not talking for growth here! im talking for life long training making knee care a priority.

I only ask cos im having this discussion on another board and wanted more opinions.

Thanks dudes

Re: Squat depth

Personally i think with correct warm up ass to grass is fine, however, biomechanically speaking for taller fellas any way parallel may be the best bet.
Nothing beats correct warm up lots of stretching slow controlled reps and plenty of reps.

agreed-i use wraps now and no knee pain-was sore without-i just look at it as extra ligament supporting joint

Re: Squat depth

I think deep squats offer better development and you can use lighter weight.

Re: Squat depth

Deep

Stopping halfway is putting direct pressure right on your knees... not good news

Go all the way down, and you'll get the benefit of your quads, hams, glutes all helping out

Just use a sensible weight that you can control and do the full rep range with

Re: Squat depth

Parallel is fine.

Going further results in patello-femoral compression, which isnt good at all.

On a healthy knee I dont think this is an issue.

Re: Squat depth

i think most people who squat really low have a wide stance like powerlifters ect, this is ok but will catch the glutes heavy so expect the ass to develop i stopped squatting low cause my ass got to big i think balance is everything so a big ass looks bad on small legs and upper body

as most bodybuilders would squat with legs at hip distance as this develops the outer quads better with out the extra weight through the back this though would make lower squats worse for you as the angles are all out

but light and controlled go low yea but ass to grass might just mean you have a big ass lol!

Re: Squat depth

I used to do standard ass-2-grass rear squats, but since reading 9packs posts, i use front squats to parrallel and my quads have come on a fair bit.

I made an awesome tri-set that i teach certain clients in the gym, knackering and does the job if in a hurry.

15 front squats (to parallel)
15 stiff legged deads
3 lengths of studio walking barbell lunges

All of them with no rest, once completed 2mins rest then again twice more.

Works for me as its done within 20mins if im in a rush, so it goes quads-hams-overall legs...killer!

Re: Squat depth

since my lower back packed up squating 220k im doing front squats too now did 100k last thursday so was well happy and i think your right there hitting the quads a treat

also with my lower back problem they seem ok as you tend to have to stay very straight and upright through movement where as if i go heavy with the bar across my back i tend to use lower back too as my body folds in the movement

Re: Squat depth

I don't seem to be able to squat deep at all... even on what are quite light weights. I think that my calf muscles aren't felxible enought to allow it and I go off balance. Any thoughts?

P.S - What are front squats relative to normal squats?
