Very good observation, your calf muscles are probably too tight if you suspect they are.
Try stretching them out prior to squatting.

Front squats are the same as rear squats only diffrence is the bar is in front of you and not behind you.
I like front better due to my knees not being all that strong.

Barbell on front of delts as opposed to on rear.

Look on ExRx for photos.

I like ATG for warm ups, and breaking parallel on main squats.

Light ATG should give you more flexibility in your tendons. Heavy ATG - we don't even speak of such things.

ATG = Ass To Grass

(Bum down so it touches / almost touches your calves / resting on your haunches etc)
