Question Pull-ups

Gents,

I have well & truly plateaued in respect of my pull-ups, having gone from a peak of 3 sets of 5 with a 20kg dumbbell to failing to complete 5 sets of 5 with 8kg.
I am looking to ditch the exercise for a while, but for what? Nothing else looks as effective for working my lats.
Should I try pull-ups with a hammer type grip or palms out, instead of wide grip, or go back to pull-downs with either cables or levers? What about straight arm pull downs, pullovers or iron crosses?
In terms of reps/sets, I was thinking of starting with 5x5, gradually reducing the volume as I stall, through 8x2, 5x3 & swapping the exercise when I can no longer manage 3x3. Any comments?
Thanks.

Re: Pull-ups

Yup. Lat pull downs work for me. Try to keep a nice wide grip. I eventually aim to place lat pulldown with bar pull-ups/chin-ups. I'm pulling 20Kg less than by body weight at the moment, so I'll need to get a lot stronger first.....

Re: Pull-ups

Lat pulldowns various grips.

Low Rows

Straight arm pulldowns in front. (arms locked straight downwardly rotate them in front and towards you pulling down a pulldown bar)

One arm rows

Short Pull Ups, (only pull up a few inches using just your lats, your arms shoul remain straight)

Look up the lats here, once you know how the muscle works its easy to isolate it.

Change your grips.....Avoid wide grip pull ups...waste of time imho....use any of the following http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/dimaggio5.htm then consider commando pull ups, towel pull ups, plyometric pull ups, 1 arm assisted, or plain 1 arm pull ups....Theres a long list...If your getting stuck at a set rep then maybe introduce some negatives to help build a little more strenght...when you fail just us a box/bench to step on to get you to the top then resist the pull down..

Chins are far the most functional back exercise you can do so stick with them.......

I'll be impressed when I see one arm one finger;)

OSC, have you ever climbed? I used to climb a bit (a very little bit) & some of the people I came across could do insane (to me) stuff, like propelling themselves upwards off one arm.

Anyway, thanks for the advice everyone.

Anyway, thanks for the advice everyone.

What's wrong with a wide grip? I thought these were supposed to be the most effective for building width.

Thanks.

/\/\/\/\ Myth, if your very young you can use the wide grip to stretch out the cratlidge of your clavicles to a small degree, but as for wide grip building wide all your really doing is reducing the length of movement the muscle works...Look at it another way if a pack of wolves were after you and you had to *pull* yourself up & over a wall you wouldn`t use a wide grip would you:smoke:
