Question about back exercises

Just wondering, with back exercises ike deadlifts and good mornings ect...Why isn't it bad for your back? why is lifting a box with your back dangerous but not these exercises?

Re: Question about back exercises

Deadlifts and GMs are not "back exercises" per se. They are full body (particularly lower body) exercises. Much of the power of these should come from your entire posterior chain (hamstrings, glutes, lower back). For deads, you should be using your quads a fair amount too - just the same as you would when lifting a box.

If you are deadlifting primarily with your lower back, you are doing the movement wrong and are risking injury.

I found that out the wrong way! 8 months on and I'm still experiencing problems. Had x-rays taken yesterday after 4 months of prestering my GP. Wonder how long an MRI will take when the x-ray doesn't show anything!

Re: Question about back exercises

You should lift a box with your legs not your back and the difference in danger is form and technique really.

Re: Question about back exercises

I've watched people doing dead lifts and I always thought "that can't be good for his back" etc. It's been enough to put me off doing them.

Re: Question about back exercises

That is probably because 'most' people in 'most' gyms don't do them correctly, the ones they are doing probably are bad for your back!!

I know this as I work in a gym and regularly try to offer advice to people, which they generally dont want!! lol

Re: Question about back exercises

Meh. Some people should be more appreciative of good advice from professionals. If I did want to do dead lifts, I'd at least get an instructor to show me how to do them first!
