Effects of overtraining?

Hi guys, just need a really simple answer to my query.

If you overtrain does this mean that you still get the benefit of the correct amount but that the extra is just a waste of time, or,

does it mean that you arent actually going to have as good a result as if you rested more.

At the moment i go to the gym 3 times a week and train each muscle group each time, doin 3 x 8 of as heavy as i can lift.

From what i gather this is way too much to be fully beneficial, but the trainer at the gym set me on this program and he reckons its fine!!

Plus, anyone got any simple advice for what supplements are good for beginners, or just good in general.

Ta very much in advance..........

If you overtrain you will slow your progress or even go backwards..

As said above the best thing to feed your body is good quality food, supps are there to do just what they say ie supplement your diet not replace meals etc.

I'd say a good quality whey/carb drink after training and a good multi vitamin/mineral suplement are all you really need. Most other sups are over priced and over-hyped... id rather spend £30 on grub than some fancy protein powder with a snazzy label with outragous claims lol

3 times a week is fine, but you should be hitting each bodypart only once a week, and every 6-8 weeks have a growth week where you do only 2 sessions of lighter exercises, but try to make them something you dont normally do..

See Big's article for some more in depth info...
