Had an MRI scan today......

Was at the hospital today for an MRI scan of my problematic shoulder.

Didn't know what to expect but had seen them on the TV and wasn't bothered.

But man, I felt terribly claustrophobic when inside the machine.

Scan lasted 50 mins.

Started ok, I slid back into the machine but then was raised up until my face was around 3-4 inches from the top of the inside, felt uncomfortable but thought i would be ok.

Was so noisy as well, had headphones on playing music but this was drowned out by the machine.

The last 20 mins sweat was running down my face and my heart was racing, only thing that stopped me from pressing the buzzer to get out was the fact that I would have to do it again.

Just hope the scans show what they need to.

Can anyone share their own experience of a scan?

Re: Had an MRI scan today......

I install / maintain MRI systems. The 'small' size of the bore is due to needing a homogenous magnetic field and that becomes more difficult to obtain if the bore is much larger.

Not much can be done about the noise, apart from turning up the music. Some scans such as EPI / fMRI are incredibly noisy.

There are 'open' systems, not too many in the Uk and certain parts of the anatomy don't scan aswell on these. By open it means there are seperate magnetic coils above and below the patient,so all around the patient ,apart form the supports its open. They are good if someone has severe claustrophobia or are a little on the large side.

I been scanned a few times, sometimes during a repair and once for medical reasons, and the pituitary lesion i have showed up really well.

Yes not a very nice experience. It is tight in there, and I think the amount of time you're in there makes it a lot worse- To much time to think !!

The thing that got me worried when I had one, was when the Nurse gave me a panic button....

Re: Had an MRI scan today......

Had one a few years ago for a spine crush injury. Claustrophobia was grim and that noise...
I thought it'd feel better if the patient was face-down personally.

Exactly how I felt mate, had a pretty serious neck injury from rugby and had a 50 min scan, went in head first etc with head very close to the 'ceiling'. Started freaking out massively n panicking, very nearly squeezed the panic alarm but for the last 10 mins I calmed down and just felt really bored. Not a nice experience, hopefully will never have another. You're not alone I get very claustrophobic. And yes the music is pretty much pointless, you can't hear any of it as theyre not proper headphones are they?

I snapped the cords to tie it so did the same thing.

Had two, fell asleep on both, felt pretty comfortable to be honest and got woken up by the specialist.
