belt up

for some reason the guy at the gym ,the fitness instructor at the local leasure centre where i go said not to wear a lifting belt , maybe cause im not needing one cause im not lifting heavy enough weights , i duno . did nt really argue with him. im not the only one that does nt wear one at our local gym , altho outher guys do . should you really wear one all the time when training for back support. iv never had any problems so far , but as i said maby just cause im not lifting heavy enough weights yet. have been looking at them on the net , they are various prices , i suppose like anything else you pay for what you get . is there any passific belt better than outhers ? Have also seen guys with gloves also for lifting , i dont really see the need for them , a rub in the chalk bin usual sorts out the sweety palms on my hand to grip the and operate what ever im using .

Well I dont use them. No belts, wraps, straps. I think the belt isn't even for the back, it is more for the stomach. Dont use them mate.
But if you did buy one, I like the velcro ones.

I use a belt for my heaviest squat and dead sets. I use chalk also for deads. I don't use any knee wraps for squats yet, but that's because I'm not moving enough weight to need them. I use straps on barbell rows. I don't use gloves on anything.

It depends what you want to do, how much you're lifting and your goals as to what you should be using.

Well my back is knackered so i use a belt most of the time when shifting heavier weights. It just gives me peace of mind more than anything.

I think though that not using it will make your back stronger in the long run then when you get on to realy heavy weights start using one.

I agree, in my opinion it is a crutch. If you have to use straps then your grip is weak. Work the weak link out.

I use a belt for squats and deads - esp for squats - 1 for confidence, 2 for safety...got a bad back and seeing a chiro, but i don't see a problem with a belt for these two exercises as long as u do core exercises - DO NOT WEAR A BELT AND DO NO CORE EXERCISES!!!! - everyone doing heavy compounds needs a strong lower back and abs (also grip!!)

Well first off where was the hernia, back or stomach?
If it was in his back then his back was out of alignment in the first place.
If it was in his stomach then the stomach was weak.
There are people walking around with herniated backs and dont even know it.

Stomach, like I said the belt is for the gut not the back. It holds it all in. I think that hurnia's might be genetic. I see the same guys getting them.
I know guys that get them and dont even lift.
