Get yourself both of these- Adaware & spybot - Both free, just hit run
I would recommend these to everyone - basically every time you hit the net some bastid somewhere is installing spyware on your machine, some of it is trying to steal bank info and stuff but most of it is harmless collecting info for market research. These little programmes are running constantly on your machine and drain your system resources making your computer go slow and sometimes crash. First time you run one you will be freaked out by how much crap it finds!!

Sorry gridlock but i have to disagree with some of your choices....mainly symantec and mcafee and zonealram...aka cpu hogs

Freebies which are good

Avast 4.5 home edition ..real quick updates on virus signatures
AVG 7.0.....nearly on par with the much improved Avast

Both come with email, http and p2p scanners

Best Anti virus if you dont mind paying is No32 or kaspersky Labs,
No32 imo is best though, very light on CPU too.


Firewall wise try and stick to hardware...linksys routers are fine, software is ok i suppose.

Been using norton anti virus which I bought ages ago - had to get rid of it because it was slowing my machine. been running blind for a couple of months.

just installed Avast on your advice - work much better.

In your post you were saying about linksys routers beeing better than software firewalls, I currently run my home wireless network using a linksys router WRG54T. do I need to do something to it to make it work as a firewall or does it do it automatically? Also does that mean that I can dump my software Firewall and turn the windows one off?

Windows firewall along with most of the other software firewalls available pretty much do the same thing......they block an attacker once the packet reaches your system...how safe is this?

My theory
would you consider it safe if a lion got into ur house and the only thing stopping him from eating you was the door to your bathroom???

See if you had adequate security before he enters your house, like some gates(hardware) you would feel a lot safer.

For this reason I recomend a router,I use a cisco router and by default everything is blocked unless you setup port forwarding, and this halts an attacker before he even reaches your system.

Now if your running NAT or PAT on your router it makes it even safer.
I have port forwarding enabled for a few applications..... the rest are all blocked.

I try some weird 5h1t on my comps like run a clean install of xp with no patches and no av and see how long before i get infected or hacked
Record was 3 months before i got infected, but not hacked. (watch soemone hack me now after that comment)

I did a lot of test's regarding software firewalls recently after hooking up my dual routers and found hardly if any need for a software firewall. A few notifications about random port scans...

If your on dial up or dont have a router then use a software firewall, but for users with broadband and a router dont bother unless you are a anally retentive security masta...aka wingerstain....thats not a typo....


...if there is a hacker who is competant and dedicated enough who wants to bypass your security, then he will regardless of software or hardware firewalls....people mistake script kiddies who run port scanners for hackers.

Disable file and print sharing on the NIC connected to your ISP.

Try not to logon with use with admin rights, this will stop spyware from spreading and gaining higher user privelages.

Rename administrator account

Dont click on banner or popups on all the porn sites promising you penis growth
