Exclamation ZoneAlarm users, Firewall update important

Hello if your using ZoneAlarm Microsoft Update KB951748 is known to cause loss of internet access for ZoneAlarm users on Windows XP/2000. Windows Vista users are not affected. You might have to update your ZoneAlarm cause mine was causing problems after new update from microsoft causing problems.

do many use zone alarm on here?

Far too restrictive for me unless you buy their 'pro' version..

yeah, there is a free version but it doent provide any option for opening ports iirc, so its not compatible with any p2p programs (azureus, limewire etc).

agreed, you need a firewall - my router has one up and i use the software one built in to xp though so im happy that ive got it covered though

That is complete FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt). All a host level personal firewall essentially does is stop connections being made to any listening services on your PC. Looking at forums is perfectly safe, no one can steal your data unless they intercept the data you send and retrieve (unlikely on a home network) or gain access to the forums database. In which case has nothing to do with you, its up to the administrator to keep up to date with the patches and other factors beyond your control.

Of course you are just trying to give friendly advice which is appreciated but just understand that security is a process and not a product. Dont be scared of using forums!

Re: ZoneAlarm users, Firewall update important

Yeah had this problem myself yeaterday. Could not get online. Thought it might be talktalk server gone down. I then changed the level of the firewall to medium and can get on. Thanks for the info Welshy_Pete. I'll chek the link.

Re: ZoneAlarm users, Firewall update important

Well the art of security is to get the balance between usability and security. These days the easiest way in is through the human element; "There's no patch for human stupidity." A firewall is just one layer of security and often just gives a false sense of security. Admittedly it is a lot harder to penetrate a home user's PC (whos kept up to date with patches etc) than a larger network such as an enterprise or education institute. Home users don't need to offer any services to the outside world such as email, web pages etc. Where as say, the server this site is hosted on, it needs to serve the site or its not doing its job, therefore it has a larger attack surface. Maybe im just ranting lol.
