Courier jobs?

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone had any knowledge of this. I am currently searching for a job to tie me over until I start uni. After working in a supermarket for just over a year, I left to concentrate on my a-levels and really wouldn't want to go back to a supermarket.

I wouldn't mind doing a courier job, e.g. driving a delivery van for DHL, Citylink etc. I have a full UK driving license with no convictions, however does my age make me not eligible for this kind of work as I am 18?

Thanks for any tips.

Re: Courier jobs?

A lot of places have a 21 clause because of the insurance, but be worth getting in touch with them to check. Have a ring round the local firms, if you're thinking of using your own car to do the courier work summat to bear in mind is your insurance won't cover you to use it for hire or reward so if you're doing a courier job your insurance will basically be null and void unless you ring them up and sort extra cover out.

Re: Courier jobs?

most courier drivers have to be 25 yrs or older due to the insurance,,You might get a job with a small company or try the post office their usually after drivers for collections over the summer period,,no harm in asking at your local sorting office

Re: Courier jobs?

Unlikely to get a job driving a company vehicle, even using your own you will find it hard to find a place to take you on unless it's some sort of food delivery.

Re: Courier jobs?

it isn't easy....

on average (when i worked for securicor) you had between 80 and 100 deliveries a day.

you really have to think hard about it as a job.... its not something you can just pick up and drop...

some firms do self employed (so you need a reliable van of your own) otherwise they usually have an age restriction..

the other option i did was motorcycle work, but the life expectancy in london is 3 weeks on average... not job length, but actual life expectancy..

up to you but think hard...

Slam,

Is there any firms in the North West who offer 'support' etc for passing the HGV license?

I'm 25 now & I've wanted to do this for a while, but can't afford the £1-2k outlay.

Cheers,

Chris

My brother got his HGV Licence from here
http://www.nctraining.co.uk/offer.htm

the dole paid for it for him as he was unemployed for over 6 months, hes now in full time employment, might be worth giving north cheshire training a ring as they have contacts with many HGV employers.

not really sure.. the bigger ones sometimes do ( i know stobarts have a driving school) but realistically you are far better off doing it off your own back. you can then work for who you like without any contract issues.

it might just be better to ring round some local firms.. see if they do pay you to take the course.

Re: Courier jobs?

Driving for SHELL probably requires you to be 25yr+ with years of experience and thousands spent on getting the right driving/health and safety certificates...not to mention all the time away from home/good diet/gym. Probably easier to get into the offshore industry, at least then you have proper time off.
