GCSE Maths - Really need help

Right im trying to master equations and simultaneous equations. I have this question. I have got right near the end but cant finish question off. Please help.

" solve the simultaneous equation "
y = 5x - 1
y = 2x² + 1

So far on it i have done:

5x-1 = 2x² + 1

2x² + 5x + 2 = 0

And from the quadratic equation of ax 2 + bx + c = 0
I have a = 2, b = 5, c = 2

NOW, what do i do ??

Thanks a lot if somebody can help me.

Re: GCSE Maths - Really need help

I haven't done this for years so it could be wrong...

5x-1=2x²=1
0=2x²-5x+2
0=x(2x-5)+2
-2=x(2x-5)
-x-2=2x-5
-2=2x-5+x
-2=3x-5
0=3x-5+2
0=3x-3
3x=3
x=1

Re: GCSE Maths - Really need help

2x^2 + 5x + 2 = 0

to solve this, you need to get it in the the form

(2x + 1 )(x + 2 )

then either 2x + 1 = 0 or x + 2 = 0

so x = -1/2 or x = -2

do you understand that?

2x + 1 = 0

take the 1 to the other side, equation becomes

2x = -1

then to get rid of the 2 to leave x on its own you need to divide both sides by 2.

2x / 2 = -1 / 2

the 2's on the left cancel. leaving

x = -1 / 2

Good luck, worst case scenario with most GCSEs, if you get your name right you are awarded at least a B grade

Re: GCSE Maths - Really need help

If you have time bb the great, could you help me with this one ?

zsquared - 8z + 15 = 0
Would i factorise and find two numbers that times to get 8z and add to get 15 ?
( z ) ( z ) = 0
i thought it would be z + 3 and z - 5 but i couldnt get the - 8z from doing FOIL.
