| Doorwork to fund medical research- advice needed Need some advice from you lads.
From Sept 08-Sept 09 I need a part time job that brings in 10k after tax. The reason for this is that I'm carrying out research into exercise and immunology so I'm leaving my full time job for a year. I have a mortgage that needs to be paid and I've enough savings to see me through the 12 months if I also bring in 10k (after tax). After the year is up I can go back to my full time job as normal (I'm being seconded).
Since the reseach will be carried out weekdays I thought that door work would be ideal for extra income to work evenings and weekends. I have loads of mates who are doormen at present so getting a job wouldnt be a problem.
I just need to know if you have any advice as to where is cheapest to do the course and how much the badge is at present.
Also, do you think I could bring in 10k after tax this way?
Cheers

If you cant do door work other night shifts will pull in very good wages and a range of jobs on offer
suppose it depends on geographical location and jobs available
10k is about 12.5-13 before tax so 250 per week
8 quid an hour jobs are 'findable' and thats a standard working week, which gives you an idea
driving, general security anf function work maybe available

| Re: Doorwork to fund medical research- advice needed the figure after tax you want is achievable but you may have to work stupid hours to get it (the lads i know that should be getting £400 a week are coming out with £280 after tax)

| Re: Doorwork to fund medical research- advice needed Door work is an ok option but i agree with the other posts about more appropriate jobs. Im fortunate enough to work in house at a popular night club so we get an excellent rate of pay and cash bonuses. However before that i was working crazy door hours trying to make the same money i make now doing 25hours a week. the other thing you have to take into consideration with door work, is theres no sick pay, holiday pay, benefits or bonuses, not to mention the obvious fact that the job posses a huge X factor. It doesnt matter were you work, if alcohol is served then your going to have drunken idiots. Some are worse than others, but the danger in the job for the money aint really worth it. |

| Re: Doorwork to fund medical research- advice needed as above, with the doors comes the other purchases
- a pair of boots
- body armour
- etc
i cant remember the last fist fight i saw, everyone picks up weapons these days, so you are at risk of getting jibbed or losing an eye or something
i do it as a second job, and we all went cards in so i dont earn much off it (less then £10 an hour after tax) but i bear in mind that it is a 2nd job (ie im not trigger happy anymore)

6 months is a long time to wait around to start working!
So, you mentioned other evening jobs. Could you name specific ones?
Location is Newcastle.
Cheers

Thanks mate. Exactly the same sums I've been workng out I couldnt believe the reduced tax on that wage compared to mine now which is slashed to death before it arrives in my bank! also, can you believe my employer (one of the biggest educatonal insitutions in the UK) is giving me zero support to further my academic background!
I also thought of door work as it would be the easiest to get straight into (after course and badge completed). There are some nice bars that I could get on with nice clientel. I've worked unofficially on a few doors a while ago so I'm not naive to the possibility of fighting/threats etc.
But, also understand that the same money could be made easier by other means. Could you name specifics mate? Wouldnt I need experience with the other jobs?
Thanks
