Company Car yay or nay?

Currently I have use of a shared office car, it's pretty much my own but I have to log every journey.

I have been offered a company car which I WILL get taxed on but I will also recieve a petrol allowance for (after submitting weekly business mileage). At the moment it's a crappy Rover 100 but I will be offered a choice of new(ish) cars to pick from.

I also have a car of my own (which obviously I have to tax, MOT, insure etc) it's (again) a crappy peurgoet 106.

Has anyone got any experience of this, should I keep my orginal car or take the company car?????

Cheers

It's not really worth it these days to have a company car.

It's easier to keep your crappy car and claim 40p a mile...

Re: Company Car yay or nay?

I would see if they offer a company car allowance, my other half gets one and its a lot better than the compnay car business....before that we had a company car, but her work had it down as a hire car for some reason so we paid fcuk all for it for 2 years! haha

Re: Company Car yay or nay?

Hi Jock,

As someone who has had a company car for years I was shocked to find during my interview for my current employer that they offer a cash in lieu system. Basically, they pay me extra in my salary to allow me to get a car.

You will need to weigh up the options to see what is best for you.

Company Car - pros - no hassel, insurance, tax, tyres sorted for you.
cons - taxed at least 18% (maybe more now, not sure) of emmissions.

Own Car - pros - can pick whatever car you want, can submit form to tax man to claim business mileage back (P11d),
cons - inital cost for tyres, tax and tyre and stuff to be made by you up front

If you are a low business mileage user then I would say stick with your own, claim the mileage allowance and add 10 - 20% on to cover your travelling to and from the office!

If you are a heavy mileage user then go for the company car which allows you to thrape the balls out of the engine!!!

I get cash in lieu of a car, still get taxed on that but I also get taxed everytime I flush my bog at home.

Re: Company Car yay or nay?

Company car all the way,

yeah it cost you in tax but there's no supprises if you thrash the sh*t out of it and blow it up you don't pay.

Any way i've got a company truck double cab thing. All the trimmings of a car, leather seats, air con ect. and it costs approx £700 net inc free diesel.

BARGAIN!!!

Re: Company Car yay or nay?

a crew cab is the way to go, especially if you get a hard top on it then its a van and you don't pay tax. the other way round it is a company motorcycle... again no personal tax.

company cars are generally a bad idea unless you do silly business mileages...

Re: Company Car yay or nay?

mate get a car allowance , much better. You own the car you purchase then at the end.

if you do get a company car try and swindle a petrol card for free.

at the moment i get car allowance and dont use the car i take the train, and i even get my train paid back, so i am going to sell my car use my mrss from time to time and keep the car allowance as an extra salary.

If you travel loads though a company car with petrol card is worth it as you will be running your own car into the ground (could be expensive)

Re: Company Car yay or nay?

Be aware many company vehicles are subject to inspection on return to the hire/fleet company after their 3 years lease.

On arrival they are often inspected to a very high standard and any damage is to be paid for at the rate of main dealer repair/replace cost.

I worked for a company who inspected these vehicles and boy it was fun explaining to the M3 drivers it was no acceptable to kerb all 4 alloys without replacing them with brand new ones, and the tyres to match along with the BMW fitting :rage::rage::yell:

More and more companies are holding the driver responsible and passing these charges on

Im not suggesting all will but its something to consider when sigining up for a new motor
