| Newbie Trainer | Re: shin splints Hey fella... Yep, you said it yourself - rest is the best thing you can do at the moment... even give it a few days, and ice your shins when they feel sore (or with the weather in th UK right now you could just hang them out a window!) I suffer pretty badly from shin splints myself - which I know are caused by microfractures because my calfs are so strong (I'm pushing 420kgs on the 45degree leg press for calf raises) and the muscles at the front of my shins aren't. I've done a bunch of things that helped - Focussed on stretching my calfs right out after working them - While I'm working them, I slow the exercise right down to ensure that the calf is worked while I'm pushing the weight, and the muscles around the shin are used to stabilise on the way back down - To build up strength in the shin muscles, I practised walking around my house on my heels or you can get one of the bands they use for the bodypump classes and hoop one end round a banister or bottom of a gym machine and the other round your toes, then pull your toes toward your body to flex the muscle around your shin - work out sets and reps that feel like they're hitting the spot for you. - Downhill running... start on a shallow decline and add more as you get used to it. Take it easy with this though, as downhill running too much can cause damage to the quads and make recovery take longer than normal - Take ibuprofen, it kills the pain and brings down the inflammation and, again, ice them if they feel really bad I also found that when I took dianabol, I got *really* pumped shins and forearms for doing pretty much nothing. I'm into my hill walking and climbing, and took a friend out onto the hills. We climbed about 300ft before I had to lie face down in the mud to stretch my shins out... that was me done for the day... was in agony and decided to do something about it in the gym. All the advice above was stuff I did that helped - hope it works for you. Also, keep an eye on the shoes... I don't know if I'm just weird, but I found that shoes that had less rather than more padding helped! Ross |

A similar problem can happen to natural trainers if they are holding a lot of water. I find that after a few days of drinking 4 + litres of water per day, and droping salt intake, it usually clears up nicely.

Probably drinking 5+ litres of water per day anyway and salt intake is pretty low already. However, I will watch the salt intake even more closely now. Cheers for the advice.

Have started getting them now too even when i'm just walking somewhere, i'm on dbol, sust and mast just now so that could be the problem! I hope so anyway! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: shin splints I used to suffer with shins splints when I played a lot of football. It got that painful, I went to see a podiatrist & the nurse made some in-soles for my footwear. You'd be surprised, but the majority of shin splint cases are caused from poor posture when walking.
