MMA Vs. Boxing????

Hey Guys (oh and Girls, mustn't exclude the ladies!),

I'm a huge fan of MMA, the UFC in particular and the other week I went round to the brother in laws to watch Boxing. Now, no disrespect to any boxers amongst you, you obviously train like demons and are totally comitted to your sport but it just seems soft in comparison to MMA. I'm sure if a boxer was to enter MMA and wear fighting gloves rather than those big fluffy things that are filled with candy floss, he would do very well. I just can't get into it like I used to as a kid. It's like driving around in a suped up saxo with a big bore exhaust for years thinking it was the dogs bollocks and then someone showing me what it is like to drive a porsche. The saxo is no longer the dogs, it has once and forever more been replaced!

UFC is on tonight on Bravo at 9PM, watch it and you'll see what I mean!!

Let me know what you think!

Re: MMA Vs. Boxing????

UFC is taking over from boxing, years ago there was alot of good quality heavyweight boxers and that title meant alot and got alot of coverage, when LL got the title all of the opposition seemed to fall away and the sport died. I still like boxing but for me its UFC.

Big fan of both. Boxing for me, that is from a spectator's view!

I dont oftern watch UFC but I always seem to get the non-explosive fights witch go to the ground and end in a figure four arm lock or san gyakn strangle.

I like a toe to toe Ben v Collins type fight

Not many fighters of that caliber left

Re: MMA Vs. Boxing????

im also a big fan of both but, boxing wins for me. personally after doing both its alot harder to be a good boxer than a good mma, as boxing is two men 1 form of striking see who i better but there are too many variables in mma a great stnd up againts a great grappler = boring fight imo

Re: MMA Vs. Boxing????

I love boxing, its a fantastic sport, and at the top level boxers get huge payouts and make a worldwide fortune through ppv, box office etc..
Its at the smaller level where mma is exploding and taking away a lot of the boxing fans, mma is the fastest growing sport in the world for a reason, its basically 2 guys in a ring/cage beating the sh1t out of each other, people have been paying to watch this for centuries.

For me though it may come as no surprise that i voted for mma.

What warren has stated about grappling v a standup fighter being boring...this would be true if you didnt understand the art of grappling for the most part it just looks like 2 men rolling on the floor hugging each other, but if you understand what they are doing you can predict what they are going for or what they will go for next, a good grappling/bjj fight is like a game of chess its fantastic.

I love them both equally the same TBH.

I'll also be tuning in at 9pm for UFC - can't wait.

Nice post mate, too many ppl cannot and do not appreciate the ground game in MMA, for purists who love the sport and compete themselves its easily as exciting watching them work into positions as it is to see them standing and going at it toe to toe.

Re: MMA Vs. Boxing????

Exactly, dont get me wrong i love seeing a good standup fight though.
If you watch a lot of the main events these days ufc, elite xc etc, you find that even after 30 seconds or so on the ground the crowd start booing, ive seen fighters get booed for winning, but winning with a submission and not a KO, its ridiculous you've paid to watch a MMA fight dont complain when it goes to the ground

I hate to hear the crowd booing in any event, shows how fickle some ppl are, I watch Barnsley and have never booed the team in 20 years of going down Oakwell, and believe me, there have been plenty of opportunities...lol - just against my principles, the atmospheres at some UFC events are really flat and bad tbh, which is a pity, but Im sure its full of nobbers 99.9% of the time.

Re: MMA Vs. Boxing????

i have practiced and fought in both sports, but too watch it is boring to watch a good ground fighter on a good stand up fighter. ground on ground or puncher on puncher yes but uneven figts anrt good as one spends the whole time trying to get him on te floor tho ther tries to keep it on his feet.

cant replace the good old sport of boxing.

Re: MMA Vs. Boxing????

Well, UFC is about to start, I take on board all comments boxing is a great sport but for me long gone are fights like Ben vs Eubank and the excitement of someone like tyson. The paycheck seems to rule boxing these days rather than fighters genuinely rising through the ranks.

The King is dead, Long live the UFC.

By the way i also think the ground game is great. It brings another dimension to the sport you cannot afford to lose concentration for a second. look what happened to Brock Lesnar recently, he was beating the **** out of Frank Mir and got careless and left a leg out (/ Frank Mir took a beating and was still cerebral enough to take his opp'), which ever way you look at it, it is exactly like physical chess and playing to your strengths. What a sport!!

Feel the Pain!!!!

I know what you mean, but to be a mixed martial artists, you've got to be just that versed in all or as many arts as possible, so anyone (certainly at the top level) who is just seen as a grappler or a kickboxer has no place being in a top flight event as there ar$e would quite quickly be handed to them

Re: MMA Vs. Boxing????

If you have 2 good warriors in a full contact fight it does'nt matter what discipline it is, it will be fantastic to watch and even better to be in there.

The competitors make the sport.
