I;m an ex squadie with active service in various theaters, would I recommend anyone joining up, as long as you go in fully aware of the true facts then why not, but what are the true facts? If you get injured you will get very little help, you will see this is a big thing on the news at the moment, but basically you get sweet fa so make sure you have a good family. Are you mentaly strong, this is the biggest factor IMO having your best mates brains blown over your face is not good, I personally don't think I'll ever get over some of the things that I saw and did, once again you'll get no help. Don't ever ever rely on your senior officers for being the proffesional heros that they try and portay themselves to be, senior officers are yes men with no back bone who play politics with your life, there is a few who will stand up but these people tend to do it once their career is near the end. These people cost lives and there is nothing the men on the ground can do about it. The kit is cheap rubbish which some dog in the MOD has procured through some lunch meeting with some dodgy supplier with brown envelopes, FFS even the rations issued in the gulf are so inadequet for the enviroment that they are a joke. If a government wants to send these people to war they have the responsibility to ensure that they take every measure to ensure that these guys have the best from chain of command right down to life time support upon leaving. But this will never happen all the time people sign up. Anyway, rant over but think long and hard before you sign. Last edited by Harry; 22-01-2008 at 12:07 AM. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: British Army... Good post there Harry. I am against the war, but i think if we are to goto war, we should go there, with good arms, good equipment and WIN it. Not send out little troops, with shoddy equipment and get bogged down like we are now. What you are saying is what most people already know, and something needs to be done about it. Maybe if our government wasn't spending so much on the war overseas, they could spend it on better equipment and better care for our veterans at home, defending our own borders. |

I know you get treated like ****, paid like **** and when all is said and done no one thanks you but dammit I wanted in. Only thing that bothers me is the blokes who end up badly maimed and are put aside like an unwanted toy, neglected and preferred forgotten. I would hate nothing more than to be a burden in that way. My mate is in, not 100% but I think he's going REME after CMS. I'm envious but glad that at least he is getting to do something that, for now, he aspires. EDIT- A quote that comes to mind when thinking of the Army... "Just remember your guns were made by the lowest bidder"

I was looking for a career in the army but ended up in IT after dropping out of a course at uni. Now I think I'm glad I didn't join. Unfortunately soldiers are just political pawns. And they're not very well cared for pawns, either. That said, I have huge respect for all of our armed forces. |

![]() | Re: British Army... I just left last year, I enjoyed my time in but after 7 years decieded I had had enough. Have you visited your local carrers office? The Army has changed A LOT over the past decade with a lot of focus put on the ethos "work hard-work harder" instead of "work hard-play hard" due to manning shortages. But if you do join up you will have many opportunities to Travel, (be it seeing the ar$e end of the world mostly) participate in adventre training, sports, and alot more. What corps/regt were you thinking of joining? |
