Re: DISPATCHES ON BBC1

Its prolly true, I think ppl who only eat maybe two times per day can potentially suffer from an under active thyroid (shoot me down if im wrong :confused

Their body goes into starvation mode because it never knows where its gonna get its next serving of fuel, meaning it natuarlly starts to store bodyfat.

Hence why its good to eat 6 "small" meals per day to keep the metabolism on fire, think of it as throwing coal on an ailing fire to keep it burning, put no fuel on it, and it dies....

U r correct people have weight issues if they have thyroid problems or genetic issues but thats a very small part of the population and i doubt all the people on this programme have medical issues - just pure overeating

Guys i read a lot of books also but the long and short of it is less than 5% of the obese population are overweight due to medical factors. Of course lifestyle plays a big part, so does stress, lack of physical activity etc

Re: DISPATCHES ON BBC1

I am at the opposite end of the stick really,over-active thyroid which means you really have to shovel in the goods!!
I have managed to get my weight up to 17.5stones.
If i dont do as above,i get the shakes and alsorts, really isn't good.
My sister has it also.
I have to take 'thyroxine' each day also which i am led to believe i cant partake in 'natural' competitions since this is on the banned list.

I must also add, those who take thyroid altering drugs to enhance their physique will wish they didn't later in life if it all goes wrong.

I dont have much sympathy for those who sit around all day stuffing their faces and end up too fat to move though.

Re: DISPATCHES ON BBC1

here's how i understand it - please contradict me if i'm wrong.

i'm sure there are many people with thyroid issues who find it very easy to gain fat, and many whose naturally fast metabolism stops them from being obese. but regardless of thyroid issues, genetic factors or speed of metabolism, it is IMPOSSIBLE for ANYBODY to gain fat unless they take in more calories than they burn. it is like telling a bricklayer to build a wall without bricks. it aint gonna happen!!

people who are vastly overweight and undergo surgery to fit a gastric band often achieve dramatic weight loss. this surgery does nothing to alter their metabolism or thyroid levels - it simply stops them consuming excess calorieS.

obesity IS NOT caused by medical conditions. medical factors can only contribute to obesity. there is only one cause of obesity and that is ingesting more calories than are used.

Re: DISPATCHES ON BBC1

I think for the most part, people just dont realise how many calories their eating.

Secondly theres the gene side of it,

under-active thyroid
insulin sensitivity
metabolic rate
leptin levels
