I was just getting worried as people were telling me that you pay tax on the previous year's salary and that the give you a code for the next year, then that I pay on bands reach throught the year....head spining! So if my HR pay me through Sage or IRIS then it works out my tax for me and i'm cool?

I would look at contracting when I'm 40+ as then I will have done most things and found my competance and can command 2k a day ![]() I am quite a focused young man, I know exactly where I want to be - I am also lucky that I got the chance to do stuff.

NIC's are another story though - essentially everyone pays 11% up to the higher earnings point, and above that you pay 1%. You can also make voluntary contributions (Class D) if you have a shortfall. If you call HMRC they'll tell you if you have a shortfall, as not having enough NIC's can affect your state pension entitlement.
