Re: PAYE Tax & NI

I do the wages at my place and the IR send you a CD every year with all the calculators for tax and reclaim etc.

I use IRIS not sage and it automatically calculates any rebate.

Re: PAYE Tax & NI

LOL nah but the HR lady always has a squeeze of my arms in the kitchen the mucky cow

I do work a lot of hours tho as Baz said, I leave the house at 4:45 every morning and dont get back till 7-8 o'clock at night, but I still fit my training in and meals etc so people who say they aint got time for the gym......

I was just getting worried as people were telling me that you pay tax on the previous year's salary and that the give you a code for the next year, then that I pay on bands reach throught the year....head spining!

So if my HR pay me through Sage or IRIS then it works out my tax for me and i'm cool?

No overtime pay!! not a chance. I would not work a minute more without claiming another hour. My days of working every single hour when needed, getting woken up at 3am by Australian office and working weekends for free are over.

Mate you need to go contracting..... You in IT and come across as a clever chap why are you not contracting?

My mate contracts in the sector that I am in (hedge funds) and when it comes down to it we work out about the same. I get a nice bonus, stock grants, medical etc etc and he picks up a nice daily rate but nothing else. I kind of like the security of the perm role, plus on my CV it looks better. I want to move in to running my own IT dept for a fund in a few years and move away from the day to day work and more in to infrastructure. I am working to move all my servers to virtual (ESX) and run them off blades. I am half way through this and will then look at blade workstations for my trading floor. I also have a new cisco IP system going in and an office move next year. There is loads more stuff going on which I am leading so all that on my CV in the next 2 years will look wicked.

I would look at contracting when I'm 40+ as then I will have done most things and found my competance and can command 2k a day

I am quite a focused young man, I know exactly where I want to be - I am also lucky that I got the chance to do stuff.

Re: PAYE Tax & NI

HMRC is getting rid of the 10% band from April 2008 and the basic rate will be 20%.

NIC's are another story though - essentially everyone pays 11% up to the higher earnings point, and above that you pay 1%. You can also make voluntary contributions (Class D) if you have a shortfall. If you call HMRC they'll tell you if you have a shortfall, as not having enough NIC's can affect your state pension entitlement.
