New Study: Gyms Are Failing To Fight Obesity

Iv'e just read this from from Yahoo.

Now there trying to blaming fitness clubs and gyms for obesity or lack of help that these places are giving??? its all about what you eat! if you burn more cals than you put into your body, you wont get fat...it really is that simple (for most anyway)!

.................................................. .................................................. ..........................................

Private gyms are reaping the benefits from obesity health scares but are doing little to help fight the epidemic, a report has said.

Obesity figures are still growing despite the UK's booming gym industry, according to research by an academic at the University of Leicester.Dr Jennifer Smith Maguire's study found private gyms were mostly used by richer members of society.

This left the less well-off struggling for help to combat weight problems.
The gyms also promoted exercise not as a part of everyday life but as something to be "squeezed" into the daily routine.
The focus was placed on looking healthy for image and not health reasons, the study added.

"The commercial fitness industry benefits from the scientific legitimacy and political urgency bestowed on population health issues such as inactivity and obesity," Dr Maguire said.

"But it is ill-equipped to address those issues for a number of reasons.
"In the US, for example, half of commercial health club members are in the top 20% of income earners.

"At the top end of the market, high income earners can afford excellent services and an 'enlightened' approach to fitness.

"But at the bottom end of the market, middle and lower income earners can afford fewer and lower quality services and a 'factory' approach to fitness.

"And at the very bottom, excluded altogether from the market, are those individuals most likely to be inactive and obese."

Last month, a Government report warned more than half of adults and a quarter of children would be dangerously overweight by 2050.
Obesity is projected to cost the country £45bn a year by 2050. By then, only 10% of men and 15% of women will be the right weight for their height.

Fred Turok, chairman of the Fitness Industry Association, rejected the study, saying the industry was uniquely placed to help solve the UK's escalating public health crisis.

But he called on the Government to lead work on balancing the need for exercise with education programmes on the food we eat.

He said: "The industry has the expertise, the resources and the capability to help address the current public health crisis, but it can only work with those who choose to do something about their condition."

This is fun to read, great to see them blaming anyone but the obese. Are we going to be that 10% in 2050?

Re: New Study: Gyms Are Failing To Fight Obesity

its down to the individual whether they meet their goals or not.

Then again I would imagine that there are fitness chain gyms out their that dont give a **** about whether or not people are getting healthier providing they are getting cash.

this is bollocks. Fat people always finding excuses everywhere trying not to lose weight as its so much effort.

There idea of cardio is seeing how many dunken doughnuts they can eat in one mouthful.

Re: New Study: Gyms Are Failing To Fight Obesity

imo the problem is that most people dont educate themselves on the matter, mainly food&exercise. if they did that they wouldnt have to rely on the questionable information given by the media and false prophets(`fitness gurus` selling their latest AB Crunch 3000 fatburning machine/pills). but its hard to blame them - they rely on tv and crappy magazines in everything else and they think what they see there is always true. and when their local fitness club sells them`fatburning-shakes` (at inflated prices) they believe it works. then they give up cause they see no results (obviously, since they have no idea about nutrition and exercise) and blame the gyms. people should be educated about these things in school.

Re: New Study: Gyms Are Failing To Fight Obesity

it's Tesco's problem for lowering prices of food and mainly junk food so these whales can gorge themselves whilst slowly becoming part of the lounge furniture.. or it's McDonalds and Burger faults cause they on every corner and how can you pass one without having 4 burgers, 6 large chips and a extra large coke before you get to gym and then decide to rather go home.....

it's natures own form of birth control... cause who wants to fck a fat chick!!

Re: New Study: Gyms Are Failing To Fight Obesity

I would say a lot of it is down to the culture of our nation, long work hours, stressful work at times, easiest option when it comes to food is just get something thats done quickly and eat it on the fly rather than take time out to cook and prepare a meal.
