anyone know about car write offs

a couple of months ago my car got damaged whilsed i was shopping, the guy who hit it with his van (hired van) left a note so - good news i can get the car repaired.

what is the chance it will be a write off (it has a smash in the back light and the metal has been broken (as if a cutter has gone through it)

what would cause a write off from the side angle, so i can compare too my car? The dent + cut is about 13cm long with a large scrape and smashed light. the car is a volvo v reg (v40) i know boaring car.... am hoping it will be a write off

Re: anyone know about car write offs

They normally write the car off if the value of the repair is more than 50% the current market cost of the car.... had some tw^t smash up my alfa gtv and had to practically begg the valuator to ok the repair costs even though they were well over half the cars value...

Just take it to a really expensive garage and say that who u wanna use, make em bump it up so it gets written of and u might need to sort em out a nifty if it works. (VOLVO DIRECT SHOULD BE EXPENSIVE)

Re: anyone know about car write offs

Hopefully they value the cost @ £2k and job done, only reason I know this is had a bit of bad luck with cars......

But if they repair it not much you can do unless u go to the garage its at and bribe them a little ;)

Re: anyone know about car write offs

Have the investiagtors seen the car yet ?

If not then you probably could get away with it (but dont hold me to it), but u would need to hit it hard and really take it into as many pannels as you can so basically there is more to repair. But be careful not to get caught out, and maybe if you got a mate with an old van use that so it sort of resembles the same damage marks.

I think your wasting your time I served my time as a panel beater and did the job for nine years, insurance engineers know exactly what they are looking for and how and what causes what damage if you get caught out you are fcuked. Unless you get lucky and they say the rear quarter panel has to be replaced (unlikely) they will ok the repairs.

Re: anyone know about car write offs

the other prob is i got a huge dent in my front door scrapes all along and a craked windscreen from when a biker drove into the side of me in november time (they are still looking into the acident too see whos fault it is). So my car just looks a mess and i will have too put it back to the insurers in a month or so for that (excess is well high aswel)

Re: anyone know about car write offs

Lewis the rear quarter panel is the rear panel which is adjacent to the back light. As for the other crash if your windscreen is cracked and it is in your line of view, your car is not classed as road worthy and you could be done by the coppers. If you are fully comp you can get the windscreen replaced for a nominal charge most insurers ask you pay the first £50 or £60 towards replacing it and it does not effect you NCB. If you are lucky and the first crash is also found in your favour you could end up getting both repairs done.

To be honest it sounds like the first crash should effectively write you car off,as it sounds like you'll need a new door, and that side repairing & painting add in parts and labour (especially on a volvo) and it would probably be written off.

Re: anyone know about car write offs

Lewis,
I spent 7 years as an insurance motor engineer and we can tell instantly if damage is not consistent with the incident circs so I would leave it as it is.

If the car is deemed a cat C or D total loss then you can ask to retain the salvage & have it repaired yourself. The reason a car is 'written off' is because an insurer has to repair using manufacturers parts where possible & replace panels where under other circumstances the panel might repair.
They don't total loss a car if it is economical to repair.

Either way, if the car is repaired or total lossed, you will be indemnified, that's why you pay your premium. I would have al ook around at what you would have to pay as a retail customer to replace the car like for like. I must stress like for like, i.e same model, year, similar mileage, history etc. gather a few adverts & wait for the engineer to value the vehicle. Provided you did your homework right, even if the book value is lower, the engineer can exceed Glass's/CAP guide figures if it can be proven that these cars sell consistently over guide values.

Re: anyone know about car write offs

When I had a write off plus few new exterior Volvo V40 parts installed, I was charged 5000 as a package. I just didn’t ask how much for the write off. But, I guess they gave me a fair rate.:gun:
