Peoples Advice

I work with a lad thats struggeling a bit with gettting into shape. I never offer advice but if some one asks ill give them my tupence apneys worth.

anywa, today some one else at work told him......................

"now listen, ill tell you how to get in shape..........when i was lifting weights, i used to bench 50kg, id do 85 reps, then rest 60 seconds and do as many as i could again, about 45 50 then rest then as many as i could maybe 25, then again until i done about 5reps...........id do that for all my lifts.........you want lots of carbs.............and you will grow...i was as big as an ape when i trained like that"

Now, i like the idea of this, going all out, ainst what you read in the mags, as might try a couple of sessions of trainng like that, jst to shake things up, but i would not train like that for long!

the lad being advised needs to get away from mens health magazine etc but im not sure he should be listening to advice lke that.

Some questins

1) what would you have said to that advice?

2) have you ever trained like that?

3) what do you think of that advice

4) why do people give advice as if they are experts when they are not?

5) how comes people look back and remember things so wrorng? im sure when asked how much he thought he weighed "back in the day" he said "i never used to weigh myself but prob about 12stone! he is 6ftish so was never built like an ape!

Re: Peoples Advice

There is no one way to train.

I know a very large/ well built gut that lifts really light for high reps. When doing his reps he does so Super slow liike 10 secs a rep.

Try everything once and if it works then stick with it.

I honestly think that routine would shock your muscle if all you ever do is the standard 4X8 rep scheme

Re: Peoples Advice

1) what would you have said to that advice? I would have told him I could get better results spending one tenth the time in the gym.
2) have you ever trained like that? no, but you can once in a while to break a plateau.
3) what do you think of that advice not for the beginner
4) why do people give advice as if they are experts when they are not?
To make them selves feel important by helping others, it is just an opinion in the end.

Re: Peoples Advice

LOL thanks for the replys lads, along the same line as what i was thining. I actually thought that 50kg for 85 reps was an impressive number and i guess, you would have to be in good shape to complete that, but i didnt thin it was the advice this lad needs. He gets ribbed at work as he always says he's going gym, but aparently hasn't ever changed his aperance, so much so that he refers to the gym as BURGER KING lol when i first started i thought he actually went to burger king mon/wed/fri as he would tell people on the phone "im off o burger king soon so ill phone you at 3pm lol

Im sure he will get there, just hope he learns to research things and find his own way.
