Broke my wrist today playing rugby!

well...my second match and i break my wrist. got tackled from the side, fell awkwardly and now i have a cast ffs! only broke my other wrist bout 6 months ago.

im gutted, i was really getting in to rugby and my gains from training were great. now i'll look like a right **** going out, and i have a big night planned to go to london fri night and now i have to wear a cast aswell.:(

how can i try to preserve muscle mass for as long as possible? especially upper body, at least i can still train legs.

thanks for any help.

Re: Broke my wrist today playing rugby!

not sure...i went to the hospital ant it was x-rayed, initially they couldn't find a thing. but the swelling was awful so they got the consultant who found the most minute fracture on the taurus bone. i was annoyed because i hate plasters, i pleaded for a splint but they wernt having it. so i've got to go back monday to fracture clinic hopefully il get a removeable splint then.

Re: Broke my wrist today playing rugby!

I can sympathize mate, I did the both bones in my left wrist playing rugby when I was 15.
Don't get too down about it mate I'm sure you'll be back in no time, I remember my Dad made me buy a squash ball when the cast came off and squeeze it repeatedly for 10mins to build up the strength - it worked great.
Keep eating clean and don't stop your cardio, you can still train your legs!

Best of luck,
Jock

I know this won't compensate for a lot, because I do feel for you - but the rest will make you grow if your diet is kept spot on.

Keep your chin up bud

Re: Broke my wrist today playing rugby!

could anyone give me a rough estimate as to when i could expect to train again? the fracture was so minute it barely showed on the x-ray. i'm hoping 3 weeks.

Re: Broke my wrist today playing rugby!

If it was a proper fracture i think around 6weeks.
But if its minute like you said maybe 3-4?

Re: Broke my wrist today playing rugby!

If it's 3 weeks you won't loose anything if your diet is spot on. Anything longer obviously your body will notice your not training. However; if you were to eat 5 burger kings a day and did nothing you wouldn't be preserving your muscle mass, but eating clean & continue as you were will not do your body any harm.

Train the side that is OK, uni lateral training has been shown to have an effect on the untrained side.

I've broken my right hand a few times, and just did db curls, one arm press etc.

If your gym has machines, like Hammer, then you can even do one arm bench press, it wont be ideal, but better than nothing.

I was able to put pressure on it after 3-4 weeks, a bit more each day.

I did not have a cast though, so that may restrict you a bit?

Re: Broke my wrist today playing rugby!

Anyone know of any methods to reduce welling, as its not the fracture that hurts but the swelling. I can't use ice easily as its in plaster. I'm taking ibuprofen for the pain, are there any foods, remedied to reduce swelling as then i can take the cast off myself.
