My son been training for 9 weeks

Hello All

My son is 11 years old and been weight training with me for 9 weeks now (I have been training for 10 months) I started him on just the bar and he has added weight very slowly now he wants to start pushing him self on the weights as he is saying they are to light.

His diet is fairly good for a you lad no rubbish just good food, he is getting very interested in Bodybuilding and I am not sure if to let him go for it as he is only 11 what you think.

Lots of people say its bad for him and his bones what are your thoughts ??.

No IMO.

I'd say things like press ups and sit ups are ok but adding weight is a no no.

What about general fitness, like running or swimming?

I'd say 16 at a minimum for weights.

Well, I started at 15 but I do think 11 might be pushing it some.

Big posted some info about this on the leg extension thread?

Exercises using his own body weight are probably ok.

I do really wonder what research has been done and what is medically recommended.

I think learning perfect form would be ok as well, and how to pose of course

Hi glad to see your son is into it at that age! Im 16 atm and have been advised by quite a few people not to do free weights, im still using fixed weights and my own body weight. So i would say it would be a no go for your son at 11 IMO. Good to see he does want to progress though!

I have searched the internet to see what experts say, some say its ok and beneficial and some say its bad for kids.

I think I will just let him stick to small light weights for now until I get some more advice.

I'm coming up to 17 and have been training pretty hard for about 4 months now and am enjoying it, I think its fine at this age plus I'm 6'2 so I'm not to worried, but at 11 I'd give it a miss.

I do free weights etc, but I think its too much for a young lad.

i started messing around at 14 and going for it at 17 no real problems yet! i would always do little things why my dad was trainning in the garage when i was really young, like bicep curls and things i felt like rocky after and would beat my brother, that was the only real side affect.
