![]() | Article in Metro on Steroids, Crack and Heroin Young bodybuilders pumping themselves full of steroids and student clubbers injecting toxic coctails of heroin and crack are becoming 'mainstream' a report warned yesterday. The poor self-image of young men has led them to turn to anabolic steroids to increase their muscle bulk. Others have becoe addicted to 'speedballing', a process involving a cocktail of heroin and crack cocaine. The practices are now commonplace in 11 out of 20 cities surveyed by the charity DrugScope. (Their typo) Mike Linnell, of drug outreach group Lifeline, said "It's all about how [young men] look, their image on the street. The problem is that a lot of them are taking steroids with virtually no knowledge of what they are doing'. Anabolic steroids are a class C drug and possessing them is legal-even though taking them reduces sperm counts, causes kidney problems and leads to high levels of aggression. Those who inject steroids also run the risk of HIV and hepatitis C from dirty needles (Erm only if you SHARE THEM) Speedballs, also known as 'curry and rice' , are promoted by dealers who offer a free 'rock' of crack with every two bags of heroin, researchers found. Speedballing was preferred by 80 percent of intravenous drug users at one Manchester needle exchange - up from 25 percent ten years ago. The rest is about heroin and crack and needles...................... Box below WHAT do these drugs do? Anabolic steroids are natural and synthetic hormones that help cells in the body grow and divide. They can cause muscle and bone tissue to strengthen rapidly and reduce the time needed for recovery from injury, which is useful for people involved in sports. The downside is that htey raise blood pressure, cause kidney and liver disease, and premature balness, and trigger viral infections. Drugscope estimates there are 1.6 million steroid users in Britain. Anabolic compounds used in steroids include testosterone and nandrolone. mail@ukmetro.co.uk I couldn't believe it when I saw this article. It is SO American fear mongering it makes me feel queasy! Sorry Yanks, but there is a particular way some news stories are presented to generate an emotional, rather than logical, thought process. Writing about steroids in the same article as heroin and crack has people think that they are drugs like that. Just like "There was a shooting, an unidentified black man was seen........................" Del, this one makes me mad! x x x T Last edited by Tatyana; 13-09-2006 at 10:47 AM. |

FYI math/stat geeks - According to the office of national statistics, in 2004, there were 13992.8 (dont ask about the 0.8!) males between the ages of 16 and 49 residing in the United Kingdom (lets assume no one out of these age brackets uses them) and lets assume 85% of the 1.6m AAS users are men....... so, that is 1.36m males AAS users.. 9.7% of the male 16-49 poplulation! Thats one in ten kiddies! What a load of sh1te! I love this scare-mongering! |

I am not happy that they are grouping steroid users with junkies... I watched the news earlier and there was a personal trainer, who had clearly been on gear saying how its bad etc... If they wanted to report on this then it should have been two completely different stories imo. |
