First booze-free Saturday night...

...Went without incident!!

Doing a refurb of my gym this weekend (new flooring/shelving) and took my neighbour, who's a chippie out to dinner. He had a couple of Cobra's, and made a point of commenting on the beer being ice cold and having a healthy fizz, the bubbles within rising rapidly to the top, a sign of a fresh, good beer...

I resisted. Wanted a sip to try it, but brushed aside the desire. Bit of fat in the meal, to be honest, but I was testing my ability to go without booze.

Next week I'll up the ante and go back to the pub - and drink Slimline Tonic Water!!

So far, so good - stomach also feels a bit different this morning, it must have been expecting it's seventh-day barrage of acid, and didn't get hit. I didn't expect this, but I'm thinking a bit more clearly about everything as well, today.

Onwards and upwards....

New habits are hard to start but once they are habit then they are hard to break.

Any bad habit must always be replaced with a new habit, hopefully a good one. Seems you are on your way to a good one with many benefits both mental and physical.

I'm chuffed for ya!

Well done KS!

I just came back from a wedding. I had the lactose intolerant diabetic special (so much easier to say this than dieting for a BBing comp). Refusing the wine and champers was not that difficult, but all the yummy choc deserts was!

I managed though!

Thanks all, means a lot to me!!

Notched up another small victory tonight as well, got tempted to go to a bar full of French and cheer on my fave country's team with them, knowing I'd be BOUND to see a lot of likely mademoiselles with my Kronenbourg, knowing the wonderful euphoric atmosphere I could soak up and carouse the night away with...but again resisted and am staying home to watch my team win!!

The madamoiselles can wait until this flab is gone, then it'll be THEM who can't wait...

Keep it up Keyser.

I myself used to drink like a trooper. Binge drinking every thursday, Friday and Saturday night. Very rarely drink now, prob a glass of wine a month! The problems I had/have was peer pressure, friends are always out 'on the lash/pull'.. "come out mate, come out mate" "sorry guys not tonight".............. Where I work there is a drinking culture (in fact a lot of business is conducted/produced in bars and pubs) and it's often seen as the way to get ahead.......... My girlfriend always wants to have cosy nights in having some wine in front of the box etc etc etc AND OF COURSE I love the sweet taste of my Jack Daniels and Coke....Mmmm.

However, i'm focused on what I want to achieve over the next few years and realise the only way i'm going to achieve my goals is to change my lifestyle. Simply live a (dedicated) bodybuilders lifestyle. Sticking to my diet and stay focused.

Nice thread buddy,

R

I used to binge drink loads but rarely ever do it now, I think its cool to unwind every now and then with a night out like maybe once a month but not every week.

I cut down not only because I wanted to focus on bodybuilding properly but also because i was starting to get real bad when I was drunk, forgetting everything I had been doing and basically f*cking up my liver.

I'm still trying to figure that one out, I realise that going forward it's inhumane not to let yourself go every so often, but I just want to lose this flab, I don't care about booze (he said with big brass balls, watch me come on here in 3 weeks saying, "I was gagging for a beer and I had 5 pints and 4 shots!")

Seriously though, my only concern is the weddings/bbq's I'm going to. For the next few months the Friday/Saturday 4/5 pint boozing is out the window, so unless I'm in a small celebration with champers being passed around 5-6 of us, I'm not partaking. A couple of cans at a barbie, one at a wedding, and that's it. After November I'll go for a few drinks once every month, or maybe just hold off totally until Christmas.

I think we ritualised drinking in this country, on the Continent they drink a bit less, but it's all spaced out over an evening, I blame the 11pm law for the binge drinking culture we have.

Also, my company isn't a drinking one, as a sporting organisation it puts on plenty of co-hop booze for it's sponsors, but we don't partake.

Booze not only erodes your liver but your brain and your self-respect, I for one am going to demonstrate that you can have a great time without any (Geez, I sound like one of those Bible-thumpers in the Temperance Movement, "Have faith for ye shall all only burn in the fiery flames for these here are fiery liquors!!")

Gonna pour out the beer can at the barbie and refill it with water and drink from that all day, nobody'll be any the wiser!!!

I agree with the above and can say that I too used to go on the lash every weekend and off to clubs and curries, the usual.

However, this was good between 18 - 25 and then I started to get really bored of it. I now have a family and looking forward to getting married next year. I have curtailed my drinking to a point where I have not had a beer this year and before then I was drinking probably a pint every 2 or 3 months!

I like to use the exuse that I am driving and therefore no one pressures me but other times I get bit of a ribbin of mates whostill drink like they are teenagers (we are around 32 now). They still go to the same places and some have had injuries recently (falling over and such like).

The funny thing is they are imbarressed of their injuries but as soon as the casts are off they are back up the pub largin' it.

I have set my mind for so long now that I dont miss alcohol at all. To be honest I would not care if i never had another drink again.

I think the hardest thing for me is peers pressure and insistant friends. However, if you can get over that you can get over anything!

I think with your dedicated commitment and prudent exceptions to the "no drinking" policy, you will not binge. If you do binge, ask yourself what is the emotional cause that made you binge, and find a solution to that so you recognize it's warning signs and nip it in the bud with a better substitute (NOT FOOD, please)

Seriously though, my only concern is the weddings/bbq's I'm going to. I've always just had a coke, tea, or water with lemon. Now, with the health and fitness craze, water with lemon is right up there with the booze. No one really watches what others drink. In the USA, you are accepted if you drink and if you do not drink. It is a personal choice of preference. Most hosts will have alcohol and non alcoholic beverages to be the host with the most and meet everyone's preference.

I blame the 11pm law for the binge drinking culture we have.
Can't blame that, honestly. Binging is caused by emotional needs not time constraints.

Let me set the record straight, please, the Bible only says "Do not be drunk with wine" I can give you the verse if you like. Jesus changed water into the best wine for a wedding feast. There is nothing wrong with drinking. It is the excessive drinking that is bad for a person both mentally and physically.

Gonna pour out the beer can at the barbie and refill it with water and drink from that all day, nobody'll be any the wiser!!!
Why deceive??? Why not be the leader, set the example, forge the path to better health for your friends, and teach your friends a healthier lifestyle. Honestly, I do not think anyone will think you less of a man for wanting to take care of yourself and be the best most excellent mentally and physically that you can possibly be. There might even be a envious respect for your discipline and dedication. Tell them you are committed to a healthier lifestyle. They will admire you for that. They may kid you a bit and they may even try to disuade you because there just might be a twinge of quilt within themselves about their not living a healthier lifestyle. Wouldn't that be a postive influence on those around you to plant the seed to live a healthier lifestyle? Do not be ashamed of good habits, ever.
Danny, you are right about not noticing. I have a binge problem with coke (the soft drink) and I've made a conscious effort to decrease my consumption (I hate diet drinks) so that I can lose flab and avoid empty calories. It's been 3 difficult months, but I've systematically weaned myself to consume less amounts and now when I drink one, that emotional satisfaction that drinking them gave me before is no longer present nor controls me and I do not "crave" or need them any longer. I now can take it or leave it. If I do drink one, it's not but a small glass just for a change of taste. I do not miss them now. It is a victory for me. I now binge on protein drinks LOL!!!!! I crack myself up!! going from one "addiction" to another... but at least it is a more healthy binging.

I think you will find that the more time under your belt (longer you dont) the easier it will get.

I can't have just one drink so dont fool yourself. I like shots and beer, but I hate wine.
I quit once and only drank wine but then it started out as a glass and ended up in a bottle

I try to avoid the circumstances that put me in the mood that want to make me drink.

It does take some self control.
