Teenage boys and body dismorphia - UK-Muscle Body Building Community

Hi there,
I'm writing from Bliss - a glossy teenage magazine for girls. I'm
currently working on an article about body dismorphia and eating
disorders in teenage boys in order to give our readers an insight into male
insecurities and raise awareness about these issues.
So, I'm looking for some case studies - boys aged between 14-19
who have suffered or are suffering from Anorexia, bulimia, steroid or
exercise addiction. Anyone willing to be featured will have to be named and
pictured but I can assure you that if you are kind enough to entrust us
with your story then it will be dealt with upmost care and sensitivity.
I can read it out to you before it goes to print to make sure you're
confident and happy with the finished piece.

If you work for bliss - shouldnt you have a work email address? for example emily@emap.com? Why the personal hotmail account?

my colomn for "Sheep in Leather" monthy is done from home.....

must say its a good subject , but the phrasing "steriod addiction" seems a little ,....errr......under researched,......

we'll see.

Yes I think Steroid addiction is very under informed as steroids have no physical addiction properties or any psycological addictive properties other than the loss of size but that's usually associated with bad advice on drug usage and coming off cycles

On this site we actively discourage use of anabolic steroids or any drugs by those under the age of 21 as these can permanantely damage the individual concerned and although there might be users who do start before 21 they are in the minority.

I do some work with drug projects on steroid use so I am glad to assist you if you want to gain some insight into youth steroid use as I regularly come across this in my work and advise young people on these issues. However I think you are really going to find it hard to find a young man between the ages you stated who will admit to steroid use openly as he will most probably be doing it secretly and won't want his parents to find out.

Drug use by children is now becoming an accepted factor by parents but steroid use still carries a certain stigma that bemuses me. I know this because I have spoken to a number of worried parents about suspected steroid use by their child and the worries they have are usually based on media hype of the issue.

I think shes talking more about the mental side "i gotta look big", "girls wont like me other wise", what would count as a exercise addiction?, i know people my age (im 17) and younger who have taken steriods.. becuase they think it gives instant results..

Just so nobody else wastes any time replying to this on here.. I would be very surprised if Emily ever returns to this thread.

We get this kind of thing now and then, journalists/researchers make a post leaving an email and then never return to the forum. Its a shame as some good stuff has been posted in the past by our members for people, they just dont seem to grasp the concept of a forum.

I know this is an old thread and all but in all seriousness, i think body image is a major problem with teen boys. While some teen girls will go to drastic measures to lose weight, vomiting starvation ect...Boys have the opposite and go to the extreme such as steroid abuse.

Why is it "Extreme" for a young boy to take steroids but not so for a female to starve themselves?

I believe females go to FAR more extremities than males for "Image and beauty"

I had someone from bliss a couple of months back asking me to do a interveiw with them. I'm sure i rang Dougie black,. Andi Black for this one. Way before i met out tom. lol. They were going to give me £50.

So lets add this up

I get £50, all the young girls in my area think i'm pyscho for taking steroids, every job interveiw i go for asks me if i was the one in the bliss mag. Fantastic deal this innit
