Israel massacre aid workers
At least 16 people were killed in clashes this morning between the Israeli navy and a flotilla of ships trying to bring aid to the Gaza Strip, Israel's Channel Two television news said.
Earlier, activists said two people were killed and about 30 wounded today when Israeli forces boarded a Turkish ship that was part of the flotilla which Israel had vowed to stop.
Israeli public radio quoted an unnamed Arab journalist aboard a ship as saying the navy intercepted the activists and that shooting was heard.
At least 10 members of a flotilla of ships carrying hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists and humanitarian aid supplies were killed in clashes, Israel Army Radio reported.
In a statement this morning, the Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin said he was "gravely concerned" over reports emerging of the storming of the Turkish ship. He said the department was seeking to confirm the safety of the eight Irish nationals who sailed with the Turkish led flotilla.
"The reports of up to 15 people killed and 50 injured, if confirmed, would constitute a totally unacceptable response by the Israeli military to what was a humanitarian mission attempting to deliver much needed supplies to the people of Gaza."
Irish activists aboard the 1,200-ton cargo ship Rachel Corrie , named after an American who was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer in Gaza in 2003, had set sail from Dundalk at the weekend to join the convoy.
"Two people have been killed on board the Turkish boat and 30 or more were wounded," said Mary Hughes Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Free Gaza Movement, which was behind the convoy. "As far as we know IDF (Israeli military) commandos descended on the boat from helicopters and took it over."
An Israeli religious medical service said seven people had been admitted to hospital in Haifa, Israel's main naval base, one of them in a serious condition.
Turkey's Foreign Ministry called the raid "inhuman" and said it "may cause damage to our relations that will be impossible to repair," according to the statement e-mailed by the ministry in Ankara today.
The European Union today called for an enquiry into deaths aboard Gaza aid ships and urged Israel to allow the free flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
"High Representative Catherine Ashton expresses her deep regret at the news of loss of life and violence and extends her sympathies to families of the dead and wounded," said a spokesperson for Ms Ashton, the EU's foreign policy chief.
"On behalf of the European Union she demands a full enquiry about the circumstances in which this happened. . . . She calls for an immediate, sustained and unconditional opening of the crossing for the flow of humanitarian aid, commercial goods and persons to and from Gaza."
The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, described the killings as "a massacre".
Israeli officials said overnight the navy told the activists by radio to turn back towards Cyprus or head for the Israeli port of Ashdod to unload the 10,000 tonnes of aid, which Israel would then transfer to the Palestinians in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.
The convoy set off in international waters off Cyprus on Sunday in defiance of an Israeli-led blockade of Gaza.
The flotilla was organised by pro-Palestinian groups and a Turkish human rights organisation. Turkey had urged Israel to allow it safe passage and said the 10,000 tonnes of aid the convoy was carrying was humanitarian.
Israel had said it would prevent the convoy from reaching the Gaza Strip, which is run by the Islamist Hamas group.
Israel and Egypt tightened a blockade on Gaza after Hamas took over the territory in 2007. Israel launched a devastating military offensive in Gaza in December 2008 with the aim of halting daily rocket fire towards its cities.
Most of the 1.5 million Palestinians living in Gaza rely on aid, blaming Israel for imposing restrictions on the amount and type of goods it allows into the territory.
The United Nations and Western powers have urged Israel to ease its restrictions to prevent a humanitarian crisis. They have been urging Israel to let in concrete and steel to allow for post-war reconstruction.
Israel denies there is a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, saying food, medicine and medical equipment are allowed in regularly. It says the restrictions are necessary to prevent weapons and materials that could be used to make them from reaching Hamas.
Pretty sickening eh?
The inevitable consequence of a state being allowed to believe that international laws have no relevance to it and their violation will bring no punishment. The international community sits back and allows them to do things like this, with the collusion of the USA.

Is totally sick, and things like this have been going on for a while. I'm actually banned from entering Israel due to going there to hook up with a Palestinian aid agency in the West Bank seven years ago... saw some horrid **** whilst there though.

Sanctions must be imposed. As they were against the similarly despicable regime of Apartheide South Africa. A complete embargo on all trade, no sporting links. Trade Unions should refuse to handle Israeli ships, planes or containers. Their produce should be left to rot in the holds of their vessels. Israeli teams should be refused admission to Euefa & Fifa. The rogue Terrorist State should be treated as an international pariah. Their diplomats should be sent home & all diplomatic relations should be withdrawn. All this should have been done a long, long time ago. It would have saved countless lives & we would not have this appaling situation today!
The British Government must surely cease to be apologists for and enablers and facilitators of Israel's continuous Crimes Against Humanity!

alas, the jew influence here is far too great for any of this to happen. the US is a puppet to jewish demands from within and without

Re: Israel massacre aid workers
USA will never act towards Israel. Its whole backbone is jew linked.
the Israel need to be held accountable for sh!t like this.
Kiss me where the sun don't shine
The past was yours
But the future's mine
You're all out of time

Re: Israel massacre aid workers
on the flip side, israel has a right to defend itself, and seeing and speaking to people first hand in tel aviv who've had their friends/daughters/brothers blown to bits whilst popping in for the equivalent of a starbucks or queing to get into a nightclub its pretty sobering. neither side is much better than the other and we can argue this until kingdom comes as both sides have valide points and both sides have done wrong..
you clearly are massively anti jew/anti israel.....
the israelis are saying they were attacked when they borded the ships which were in breach of their embargo. the israelis of course will claim this ;-) and the anti jews will say they were totally unprovoked and massacred without cause (again as you would expect)
so the saga continues .....with more people killed on both sides of the argument :-(
personally i say turn the whole area into a massive historical theme park and allow no one to claim it as their own. so everyone can go visit x

Re: Israel massacre aid workers
so we have the full account right now of what happened? ie the full story ..... whether the 'aid workers' were all just that, that no one attacked the soldiers? no one used knives on the soldiers, no one used the rifles of disarmed soldiers?
id rather wait for the full story to come about before going on the anti israel attack
ive been their and seen it first hand and spoken to both sides arabs and jews so am not biased as you may think
fact is Israel has an embargo, told the aid ships to not sail, told them they would be borded -asked them to deliver it to an Israeli port for distribution to Gaza....
plus as everyone knows the Israelis are a little tetchier than most on security ....for a pretty good reason - and to be fair, just visiting Israel made me have a little apathy towards them and understanding the idea of constantly being under attack.... not many major nations can claim the recent history of attacks on them by other states or threats to be destroyed....
honestly going there made me realise how paranoid they are. and how much hate their is on both sides
all this story says is that people have sadly been killed, israeli forces borded the boats - other news out their confirms this, and that the boarding commandos came under attack...
everything else is conjecture as to what happened.....
is sad people have been killed, very - but we dont know
...we could have lots of different scenarios
...1 massacre - totally unprovoked- israelis go bananas and just shoot people willy nilly
however i would imagine they came under some sort of attack - again purely a guess but i doubt they just decided to start slotting people for a laugh...

Im not sure its that simple, humanitarian aid workers?Turkish Muslim
sympathizers more like with there own agenda.
They were warned repeatedly not to cross from cypress, the navy
had no choice imo,and were attacked when they boarded the
vessel.its outside interference like this which will always
hit the headlines,so they achieved what they set out
to do.
Isreal is a country, and has the right to defend itself.

What has their religion got to do with anything?
Yes they were humatarian aid workers. 10 on board were Irish citizens. It weas filled with medical aid and food, which has not been allowed into Gaza because of Israeli apartheid.
All Israel has ever been interested in is attaining land and bulldozing Palestinian homes down to replace with Jewish settlers.
Trying to get aid into Gaza.
If there is no outside interference where will this end? When Palestinians are completely wiped out by Israeli genocide? They achieved what they set out to do? So they set out to be massacred did they? It is not Israel that is in the wrong here, its the aid workers.
You could not make this stuff up from the zionist sympathisers.

Re: Israel massacre aid workers
pretty clear you are massively anti israel (even banned from entering the country) so hardly a balanced argument is it RT10.....
Yes they were humatarian aid workers. 10 on board were Irish citizens. It weas filled with medical aid and food, which has not been allowed into Gaza because of Israeli apartheid
* so you personally know the passenger list, have crossed referenced them to security databases, have independantly verified them and vetted them?
All Israel has ever been interested in is attaining land and bulldozing Palestinian homes down to replace with Jewish settlers.
*not all, quite a lot want peace , hence why their are opposition parties in the jewish state
Trying to get aid into Gaza.
* equally they arent overjoyed by the rocket attacks that come from Gaza
If there is no outside interference where will this end? When Palestinians are completely wiped out by Israeli genocide?
*could be said of the arabs who oppose Israel - not be happy until the israelis are all killed- seem to recall this is actually the sole point of some of the groups who fight against israel?
They achieved what they set out to do?
* stop a convery of ships which they told NOT to sail
So they set out to be massacred did they?
*says who?
It is not Israel that is in the wrong here, its the aid workers.
*no one said that....
You could not make this stuff up from the zionist sympathisers.
*yet more balanced arguement
