Shoulder Pain???

Hi All,

I recently developed a little niggle in my shoulders, a little ache right in the joint. It wasn't major so I decided to push on and hoped it would sort itself out. Anyway about a week ago while working my shoulder ago it got considerably worse, and quite painful so I left it for a few days and tried again with no improvement. I thought I'd better ease up a bit and give them a chance to recover, so I dropped the weight down a thought I'd just up the reps- this didn't work... I tried lateral dumbell raises too, this too was no better.

The next day my shoulders were very sore, right it the joint (it didn't feel like the muscle.) I can't work them out now, any excercise which isolates the delts is painful. I didn't know if anyone could tell me what it is I have done, and also if there is any workout I can do for my shoulders (I don't want to lose any muscle I slaved to put on!)

Thanks.

p.s. Shoulders are fine when benching!?!?

Re: Shoulder Pain???

Sounds like you might have a slight nerve problem if you are not feeling any pain whilst benching.

Could be wrong mate but im having a right major prob with mine at the mo and im going through the same thing.

Get in see a physio bud before it gets worse...thats best advice i can give, delts are a bitch of a prob and never go away.

Re: Shoulder Pain???

Is there any exercise I can do that wont make it worse but will prevent muscle wastage?

X2m sounds like possible Rotator Cuff damage. The RC is a group of different muscles, and you need to find out which is damaged to be able to move forward with recovery. Plenty of rest and ice until you can get to see a physio.

Re: Shoulder Pain???

Go and get it checked out as advised.

It sounds shoulder not nerve to me. (no neuro symptoms like pins and needles/numbness, weakness lower down the arm etc).

If its shoulder it could be one of a number of pathologies, which would need clinical testing and full assessment to diagnose.

If it is rotator cuff (which act as a shoulder joint stabiliser), then it will be very difficult to do any moves involving the shoulder (especially overhead or out to the side). Maintaining delts without sorting out what the actual problem is pretty futile.

Re: Shoulder Pain???

Where exactly would you say the pain is? is it a sharp pain or more of a radiating pain...if you are to do a full 360 starting upwards then back again, is there a certain during the motion you get a twinge/pain? I've had problems with both of my shoulders but a lot better now. the best thing that i've found is to isolate myself from any exercises that made the pain worse.

More of a radiating pain, right in at the top of where the ball meets the socket.

Re: Shoulder Pain???

Is it painful when doing lat raises? Sounds like it could be irritation of the supraspinatus tendon (runs from the top part of the shoulder blade and under the acromion, on to the top of the ball/head of the humerus, through a gap which will be tighter if the tendon is inflamed.

If you didnt do it that long ago, then would say to rest it for a while first then just do light eccentric isolation stuff to help it recover - maybe just light negative part of lat raises. Hope this helps.

Re: Shoulder Pain???

Hey Tommy Gun

Would be good to hear how you get along with this bro cos i seem to be having the same problem in my left shoulder. Started with just a little niggle and now its progressed into a really sore injury. Like you, I have no probs benching, but when doing raises it really hurts.

I even hurts when im driving as my arms are raised!!

I was thinking about just resting for a week or so and taking cod liver just incase its a joint problem, then get back into it lightly. I dont have any probs with any other muscles.

Let me know how you get along with your injury man, maybe we can help eachother out!! I'm dying to build my traps up more as my delts are getting too big and look a little odd!

Re: Shoulder Pain???

get some diclofenic pal, drop three at once then next day 1 x 3 day, if pain goes its inflamed see doc, if not its something else see doc, but most of time they will take pain away if inflamed.

Which ball and which socket? If it's where the acromion is labelled in the pic, that's your A/C joint which is what I hurt, or if it's in the shoulder itself it's the rotator cuff, which is a broad term meaning the shoulder joint.

Your best bet is to go and see someone who can diagnose it, like a chiropractor or osteopath. I wrongly self diagnosed my problem and doing so made it a lot worse.

Re: Shoulder Pain???

My first assumption would be rotator cuff because I have had this myself.

Your best bet is to seek professional advice before doing anymore training...its perhaps not what you want to hear, but if you make the damage worse (and it is your rotator cuff), you may end up needing surgery, and surgery = more time out of the gym!
