Front squats.......

Why do they hurt so much??!!
I dont mean muscular,i mean on my front delts,i think they're bruised up now.I dont use a 'pad'...hell i've never used a 'pad' for back squats and can manage 6-7x 20kg plates per side and still no discomfort yet with front squats just it hurts as if i cant seem to place the bar correctly yet i've tried further 'forwards' and further 'back' where its pressing in my neck.

In case it matters,i'm 6' 2 tall.

Any advice as regards to bar positioning would be much appreciated.

Re: Front squats.......

Stingray, buy one. Worth every penny.

Oh, and front squats hurt because they are for real men... Keep at it.

You are basically performing a long static front raise so when front squatting, keep all your thoughts on keeping the elbows high & the head up. The squat itself is not that complicated, just the position of the rest of the body required during the lift.

I will buy a 'stingray' in a few weeks if i cant adapt to doing it without i think,i will persevere in my quest to be a man!!
You say keep elbows high and head up,this makes me feel choked because i have a 'goitre'(thyroid enlargement) so i keep my arms folded and at 90' to the floor to balance the bar.
I also have shoulders which are 'forwards facing' if that makes sense and therefore the bar doesn't sit on my chest(should it sit on the chest?) but instead just on my two front delts(is this right?).
In the past i have front squatted in a 'clean' position with me holding the bar in my hands but this isn't as easy as them olympic lifters make it look.

Thanks a lot for taking time to reply,i know you have an awesome gym to run.

Thanks again.

+1

an another thing is that they work the transverse abdominals hard ,(basically th bar sits on our diaphragm that is supported by them)

in order for our diaphragm to expand and we breathe properly it must push against the barbell too so all that adds up to the level of difficulty

Re: Front squats.......

are you holding the barbell in your hands, or completely on your arms?

Bar should resting on your delts, elbows raised. It requires fairly good shoulder flexibility, to do correctly. Bar should be close to your neck, it also shouldn't be on your sternum.

Most people find they have to use a lot less weight.

true but after the weight gets haevier i think it does sit on the upper portion of the chest a bit

Re: Front squats.......

Did some again today and yes it hurt but not too bad(wore a fleece top) and i managed to do 100kg for 6 but had to rack them because the bar was rolling down my arms but i am going far deeper now and think my technique is better and shall therefore persist and hopefully get up to about 3-4x20's per side.

Not full(ass to grass) squats because this kills my lower back because i injured it doing 90kg per side about 4-5years ago but i can do 70 per side easily and i am slowly progressing again.

The 6-7 plates(It's a gym stopper) is above parallel which i find i get most leg growth from and it doesn't affect my lower back so these are what i do mostly but i alternate exercises around.I could never do 300kg full squat....even before i buggered my back up.

As for the bar rolling down my arms,i dont hold the bar in the same way as the picture but instead fold my arms keeping the elbows high(or at least try to) and hold the bar with my fingers near my collar bone area.I struggle with holding my elbows high due to the pain in the front delts and the bar starts to roll forwards slightly and once it rolls a bit,it feels like its rolling down the arms if that makes sense.

Hope that helps.

Re: Front squats.......

I've the same issues mate as well, ref the bar rolling down, it's a fair point though keeping the elbows high, must try that.

Re: Front squats.......

work on your shoulder and wrist flexibility, and try and hold it properly, it's a lot more useful, and probably safer.

Re: Front squats.......

On most vids i have seen the people have done them in the way i described and not in the powerlift style hence me doing it the way i do it.Also it doesn't help that i think i have a break in one of the bones in my hand....either stress or greenstick fracture i would think.

Re: Front squats.......

going to try front squats to do legs and stop low back issues, will start light,my bro squatted 300k at 15st when he was still in army-right down! was impressive.
he still does 180k easy for reps no belt wraps etc[b] but with my smaller frame and back probs from sqautting will try front squats

i have to fidget under the bar before i lift it, make sure theres more muscle than bone supporting the bar

by the third set though it does pinch like hell... and choke lol
