Length of wait between sets

Right, this will probably sound stupid but I was wondering if the lenght of time you wiat between your different sets has any detrimental effect on your training?!

Say for example you have to wait ten mins from one set to the next to get on the equipment you want, is that a problem?!! Should you try keep the movement between sets pretty fluid?

Re: Length of wait between sets

I wait about a min, somtimes less. if your waiting 10 mins between sets then I know it would **** me off if i were in a comercial gym lol.

Talk less work harder. the less time between sets the more intence the workout.

Re: Length of wait between sets

depends if i am powerlifting, bbing or going for 1rms.
when doing my 5x5 routine sometimes i can wait up to three minutes between sets.
when doing arm curls or something like that i can wait 30secs.
tailor the break to suit your workouts because there is no given time that will work for all examples.

Just talking from the perspective of a BBer mate. I'm changing to a 5x5 now, take it you just do it for back chest legs and shoulders?

Re: Length of wait between sets

5x5 taxes me more, so I end up resting a couple of minutes between each set. TBH, I don't actually time myself, I start a new set when I'M ready.

It all depends on YOU & how YOU feel/recover between each set.

The answer depends on the training you do

LA training will differ significantly to bulgarian power work

If you want maximum hypertrophy then you want to train with intensity, which doesn't just mean increasing the weights, it means less time between sets, and maintaining an even cadence with reps, increasing the time under tension.

The greater the intensity = more natural GH release.

General rule of thumb with rep ranges

Lower reps (5 and under) = strength training

Higher reps 5 +++ = hypertrophy

Re: Length of wait between sets

About one minute, normally after a heavy set of squats or deads wait about 2 minutes, but never wait over 2 minutes.

Re: Length of wait between sets

For me it all depends on what exercise and what your overall targets are.

For example squats and dead lifts when i go heavy I will wait a couple of min compared to say chest cable cross overs where I will wait about a minute.

Also if im trying to shed some BF I will only have enough rest time to catch my breath and then I perform another set. This helps to burn the calories off.

Re: Length of wait between sets

On heavy compounds i usually wait 1.5 mins, on isolation I wait about 1 minute. Its just long enough to lift again but you should still be fatigued from the previous set.

If doing a 5x5 super heavy power lifting routine I'd say wait up to 4-5 mins, any longer seems like your not training hard enough.

Re: Length of wait between sets

Brill thanks for all the info lads and lasses.

I'll try out my 5x5 for major body parts. Would you also do them with say pul downs and DB rows???

With the body parts Im not using 5x5 for, should I just stick what I currently do (as written in the first post)? With the exception of biceps which I just to 3x8 after my back workout

i presume for most people waiting 1 min, their time at the gym is 30-40 mins?
