![]() | Shoulder Press... Where do you guys take your shoulder presses down to? Collar bone or just below chin? I tend to take take mine down to collar bone for lighter sets and just below chin for heavier sets using the Smith machine, especially if I haven't got a spot... Used to go down to about eye level, lol, cos the lad I trained with told Me to, and put loads of weight on... now im left with bad elbows and weak shoulders! I do Arnold Presses aswell to make sure I get proper reps, as I find this exercise good, without hurting my elbows too much. Any other compound exercises I should be doing as I don't tend to get sore shoulders the next day, and they are very weak, which I think is affecting my bench press and incline bench. |

Clean and press; this way you have to rack the bar across your shoulders before the press. its a very hard arobic exersise as well. Then I would do hang cleans; again working the shoulders from unusual angle. Its also nice for upper back. I would finish on front rases with a barbell. If you have the equipement then I would subsitute the barbell for a log. its much better for developing allround strenght in the shoulder in the clean and press. Any press technique if i didnt have a log I would idealy have a 2"-3" thick bar and use that instead of the standard barbell this is good for grip and makes the bar impossible to overgrip (a big problem with standard size barbell). Sandbag/punch bag/barrell/anvil/stone pressing to finish off is a great way to train the interconecting muscles of the shoulders and back. Isometrics is a good way to compete the session, It requires no special equipment and is good for developing strenght in the body. Its also very fast as you only hold the postion for 10 seconds per exersise. |

![]() | Re: Shoulder Press... i think that your nose is a good guide as to how far to go down on shoulder presses. Just try and keep the weight moving, and don't lock out at the top. i find that stopping at any point, or locking out makes my elbows hurt after the set.

I've been told different thigs off diferent people, think im going to stick to chin as I feel it working my delts well there... Yeah, it's after the set or next morning my elbows hurt, sometimes they click, doctor said it was ligament moving over the joint or something... I'll keep it in mind not to lock or stop, cheers. |

![]() | Re: Shoulder Press... I suppose it also depends on how wide grip you take. I take a fairly wide grip as im tall but I still keep my forearms vertical. I go down to about chin or mouth level. Never to my chest as I think that extra 6" say brings your triceps into it and have tried doing this before on the smiths machine to my chest and I think it can cause injury. I also suppose that if you dont go right to the bottom your shoulders will always be under constant tension.

| Wondering how people have the time to do all this over-complicating | Re: Shoulder Press... After watching lou ferigno in pumping iron, I now drop the bar to my chest shouting "arnold,arnold,arnold.........I need more weight, more weight! another 10lbs" It messes my shoulders right up but the pumping iron afficionados appreciate the work required to complete the impression to such a high standard |
